Amazon is quietly winding down several of its Nova artificial-intelligence models, including Nova Premier, Omni, Reel, and Canvas, according to reports. The move signals a strategic pivot as the company channels engineering talent and computing resources into a dedicated frontier-model team led by Pieter Abbeel.

Capital Intensity Under Scrutiny

The shift comes at a critical juncture for Amazon's finances. Cash capital expenditures surged 78% in the first quarter to $43.2 billion, while trailing free cash flow plummeted 95% to just $1.2 billion. The company's 2026 capital blueprint totals $200 billion, representing roughly 135% of its most recent trailing operating cash flow.

CEO Andy Jassy has defended the scale of investment. "We expect to invest about $200 billion in capital expenditures across Amazon in 2026," he stated in February, according to SEC filings. The spending spree has raised eyebrows on Wall Street, with some investors questioning the return on such massive outlays.

Not a Retreat from AI

Despite the model reductions, Amazon's commitment to artificial intelligence remains strong. The company's AI revenue run rate surpassed $15 billion in the first quarter, driven by AWS offerings. Bedrock, Amazon's platform for building generative AI applications, is now used by over 100,000 businesses, with the majority of inference processed on Amazon's custom Trainium chips.

"AI models remain one of the most important things we're working on, and that hasn't changed," a company spokesperson told Reuters. The restructuring is intended to concentrate resources on a narrower set of high-impact initiatives rather than spreading efforts across numerous simultaneous projects.

Earnings Preview and Market Reaction

Amazon is scheduled to report second-quarter earnings after Thursday's market close, with a conference call at 5 p.m. EDT. Early consensus estimates call for net sales of approximately $197 billion, up about 17.5% year-over-year, and diluted earnings per share of $1.81, an 8% increase. AWS revenue is expected to grow 31% to $40.54 billion, with operating margins improving slightly to 33.8%.

The stock has already priced in some uncertainty. Amazon shares fell 6.1% in the week ending July 24 and declined another 2.4% by Wednesday's close at $226.65. The post-results trading session on Friday will provide an initial verdict on whether investors view the strategic shift as disciplined focus or a sign of competitive vulnerability.

Organizational Changes

The AGI division has undergone significant restructuring after unreported layoffs. Former AGI head Rohit Prasad departed in December, and lab head David Luan left in February. Peter DeSantis now oversees models, silicon, and quantum computing. The company has not disclosed specific product roadmaps but stated that offerings evolve based on customer interest and that support continues for existing users.

Financial Pressures Mount

AWS continues to deliver strong growth, with revenue increasing 28.4% to $37.59 billion in the first quarter. However, operating margins slipped 1.8 percentage points to 37.7% as technology and infrastructure costs climbed 29%. Amazon's recent $25 billion bond issue in July attracted coverage of only 1.6 times, down from 3.4 times in March, reflecting rising borrowing costs.

"We're making these very large investments with the bet that we have return on invested capital," said Colby Stilson of Brown Advisory. The market's judgment will come next week, when trading patterns will indicate whether the streamlining is seen as discipline or a retreat in the face of fierce competition from rivals like Microsoft and Google.
