Shares of GE Vernova T&D India (BSE: GVTDI) rallied sharply on Tuesday, climbing 6.5% to ₹4,647.10 in early trading on the Bombay Stock Exchange, following an announcement that Power Grid Corporation had identified the company as the lowest bidder (L1) for a significant high-voltage transmission package. The stock opened at ₹4,614 and touched an intraday high of ₹4,662.55 within the first minute, compared to Monday's close of ₹4,363.

The surge reflects the market's enthusiasm over the scale of the engineering work involved, yet experts caution that the 6,000 MW figure represents transmission capacity, not the value of GE Vernova T&D India's potential contract. The company's September 7 filing confirms its L1 status for the ±800 kV line-commutated-converter terminal system, but explicitly states that execution will span multiple years and provides no rupee consideration.

Understanding the Project Scope

The broader Barmer II–South Kalamb scheme, which Power Grid won on a build-own-operate-transfer basis, involves annual transmission charges of ₹3,244.33 crore. The project includes two HVDC terminals, roughly 1,000 kilometers of bipole line crossing Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Maharashtra, associated 400 kV lines, substation augmentation, and two synchronous condensers. However, GE Vernova T&D India's disclosed scope is limited to the design, supply, and execution of the terminal station, not the entire transmission line package.

This distinction is critical for investors. The ₹3,244.33 crore annual charge is Power Grid's revenue stream, not the value of GE's equipment contract. Management has been tight-lipped about the specific contract value, with CEO Sandeep Zanzaria stating during an August 7 earnings call that the company would not share numbers while bidding was active. The project's total value has been estimated at around ₹25,000 crore, but how much of that is addressable to GE remains unknown.

Order Book and Financial Performance

The timing of this L1 status is notable, as GE Vernova T&D India's order intake has slowed. In the June quarter, order bookings fell 30% year-over-year to ₹1,140 crore, while backlog slipped 2.5% from March to ₹20,930 crore. Despite the decline, the backlog remains substantial, representing about 3.4 times revenue for the fiscal year ending March 2026.

The company's operational performance has been robust, with revenue up 38% to ₹1,836 crore and profit after tax rising 25% to ₹363 crore in the first quarter. However, EBITDA margin narrowed to 25.1% from 29.1% year-over-year, though management maintained its mid-20s EBITDA margin guidance and reiterated confidence in achieving ₹7,000 crore to ₹8,000 crore of base orders for the full year.

Valuation Concerns

At Monday's close, the stock was trading at approximately 90.6 times the fiscal 2026 earnings per share of ₹48.16. Tuesday's rally pushed that multiple to roughly 96.5 times, leaving little room for error. The high valuation underscores the need for more concrete details from the company.

Investors are now awaiting a formal award or signed contract that specifies the rupee consideration, the precise split between GE's scope and the wider project, booking dates, payment milestones, and the execution curve. Additionally, they need evidence that this work can sustain the company's mid-20s EBITDA margin target.

The bullish case is clear: GE Vernova T&D India is positioned as the lead bidder on a flagship renewable power corridor, just as order intake has slowed. The skeptical view is equally valid: investors have bid up an expensive stock based on an undisclosed, multiyear value before a priced contract is visible. Until the company discloses the contract value, the L1 status strengthens the pipeline but cannot be translated into a reliable earnings estimate.
