Micron Technology (NASDAQ:MU) shares advanced 3.2% in Tuesday's regular session, closing at $1,076.98, as investors positioned ahead of the company's fiscal fourth-quarter earnings release on September 30. The stock's intraday range spanned $1,030.02 to $1,083.00, with the high marking a 3.74% gain over the prior close of $1,043.96.

However, trading volume reached only 14.55 million shares by late morning, roughly 54% of the stock's recent average of 27.09 million. The light volume suggests the rally may not reflect broad conviction, especially with the session incomplete.

A High Bar for Margins

The upcoming report will test an exceptionally demanding operating setup. Management has guided to an 86% GAAP gross margin and approximately $50 billion in quarterly revenue. Those targets follow a fiscal third quarter in which revenue nearly doubled sequentially and gross margin expanded by 10.2 percentage points.

In FQ3, Micron reported revenue of $41.456 billion, a GAAP gross margin of 84.6%, and diluted earnings per share of $24.67. The FQ4 guidance midpoint implies a 20.6% sequential revenue increase to $50 billion, a 1.4 percentage point margin improvement to 86%, and a 24.6% jump in diluted EPS to $30.73. Capital spending is also projected to climb 40.8% sequentially to about $10 billion.

"We are investing at record levels in technology, products and supply," said CEO Sanjay Mehrotra. That spending surge underscores the central investor debate: can current memory pricing persist, or will new supply eventually erode margins?

Analyst Targets Diverge Sharply

Wall Street's price targets reveal a stark valuation divide. TD Cowen's Krish Sankar holds a Buy rating and a $1,600 target, implying 48.6% upside from Tuesday's close. Stifel's Brian Chin and RBC Capital's Srini Pajjuri both see $1,500, while Mizuho's Vijay Rakesh targets $1,300. In contrast, Goldman Sachs' James Schneider has a Neutral rating and a $1,100 target, offering just 2.1% potential gain.

This disagreement hinges on how long outsized margins can last once supply investments catch up with demand. Bulls point to contracted demand and another sequential revenue leap. Bears argue that record capital expenditures could loosen supply and compress pricing.

Contract Protections and Risks

Micron's quarterly filing notes take-or-pay agreements and fixed, minimum, or maximum prices for certain future purchases, offering some revenue visibility. Still, the company could miss its 86% margin target if contract pricing softens faster than expected. Additionally, the investment ramp could pressure returns when memory supply expands.

Micron will report on September 30 at 2:30 p.m. Mountain Time. Investors will then compare the first-quarter margin outlook against the 86% fourth-quarter benchmark—a figure that will likely determine whether the stock's recent rally has staying power.
