Micron Technology (NASDAQ:MU) staged a sharp intraday reversal on Wednesday, erasing an early 1.6% decline to close the session up 2.43% at $956.08. The rebound was driven by strengthening memory prices, which outweighed broader market concerns and underscored the company's robust pricing power in the current supply-demand environment.

The stock's recovery came after a choppy premarket session, with shares initially dipping before buyers stepped in. Volume for the day reached 21.2 million shares, reflecting heightened investor interest. The move highlights how memory market dynamics are currently a more potent force than general risk sentiment, even as valuations remain elevated.

Strong Fiscal Q3 Results

Micron's fiscal third-quarter results, released earlier, showed revenue of $41.46 billion, a substantial jump from $23.86 billion in the previous quarter. Non-GAAP gross margin expanded by 10 percentage points to 84.9%, approaching record levels. Adjusted free cash flow came in at $18.3 billion, providing ample liquidity for continued investment.

Management's guidance for the fiscal fourth quarter points to continued momentum, with revenue targeted at $50 billion (range: $49B–$51B), non-GAAP gross margin of approximately 86%, and diluted EPS in the range of $30–$32. These projections reflect sustained strength in memory pricing and robust demand from AI applications.

Memory Price Surge and AI Demand

The memory market is experiencing a pronounced upcycle. Susquehanna analysts project DRAM prices will surge over 50% sequentially this quarter, with NAND prices expected to climb approximately 60%. This pricing strength is a key driver behind Micron's impressive financial performance.

AI server demand remains a critical tailwind. Dell Technologies' COO Jeffrey Clarke recently described "DRAM, DRAM, DRAM" as the primary limiting factor for AI servers, underscoring the critical role memory plays in the AI supply chain. Micron is already shipping HBM4 in large volumes to its main customer, with multiple other customers receiving samples. High-volume manufacturing of HBM4E is anticipated within calendar 2027.

Valuation and Analyst Outlook

Despite the strong fundamentals, valuation metrics suggest caution. At Wednesday's close, Micron's market capitalization stood at $1.08 trillion, translating to 6.17 times projected earnings. This implies a forward earnings yield of 16.2%, a notable figure for a top AI provider, suggesting investors are pricing in a pronounced cyclical peak.

Analysts remain optimistic, however. According to TipRanks data, Micron holds the highest consensus upside among four major memory companies, surpassing SK hynix, Western Digital, and SanDisk. The consensus target-based upside stands at 66.8%, reflecting confidence in continued pricing strength.

Competitive Landscape and Risks

Competition is intensifying. China's CXMT has reportedly initiated risk production of HBM3E this week, with full-scale manufacturing potentially starting in 2027. This timeline coincides with Micron's expected HBM4E volume ramp, setting the stage for increased rivalry in the high-bandwidth memory segment.

Key risks include the potential for rapid price declines as new capacity comes online, heavy reliance on a few major customers, possible impacts from export restrictions, and increased capital expenditures that could reduce cash flow. The modest forward multiple reflects these concerns.

Investors will get the next major update on September 30, when Micron reports its fiscal fourth-quarter results at 2:30 p.m. Mountain time. The market will be watching closely to see if the company can deliver on its ambitious guidance and whether memory prices continue their upward trajectory.
