Vancouver-based AbCellera Biologics Inc. (NASDAQ: ABCL) saw its shares climb sharply in after-hours trading on Friday, as investors positioned themselves ahead of the release of top-line results from the company's Phase 2 trial of ABCL635, a candidate for treating hot flashes in postmenopausal women. The stock, which closed the regular session at $6.93, jumped 9.7% to $7.60 in extended trading, according to data from The Wall Street Journal.
The move reflects growing anticipation around the data, which is scheduled to be published before the market opens on Monday. The company will also host a conference call with management at 7:30 a.m. Eastern Time to discuss the findings. The trial, a placebo-controlled study involving approximately 80 postmenopausal women, is designed to measure changes in both the frequency and severity of hot flashes.
The after-hours gain added an estimated $205.4 million to AbCellera's market capitalization, based on the company's 306.61 million outstanding shares. Notably, this increase is approximately 1.83 times the $112 million in total upfront payments disclosed from recent partnership agreements with Jazz Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: JAZZ) and Vertex Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: VRTX). This suggests that clinical validation is currently a more significant driver of valuation than immediate deal proceeds, underscoring the importance of Monday's announcement.
Over the past five regular trading sessions, AbCellera's stock has advanced 18.9%, matching the performance of Schrödinger Inc. (NASDAQ: SDGR) and outpacing other drug-discovery platform peers such as Absci Corp. (NASDAQ: ABSI) and Recursion Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: RXRX). The recent rally has been supported by a positive analyst outlook, with FactSet reporting nine buy ratings and no holds or sells. The consensus price target stands at $10.75, with individual targets ranging from $7 to $13. Notably, several analysts have recently reaffirmed or raised their targets, including Piper Sandler's Allison Bratzel and Cantor Fitzgerald's Steven Seedhouse, both of whom have $12 targets, implying substantial upside from the current after-hours price.
However, the company's financial performance has been under pressure. In the second quarter, revenue fell 76% year-over-year to $4.1 million, while the net loss widened to $55.4 million, a 59.7% increase from the prior year. Research and development expenses rose 17.3% to $46.0 million, reflecting increased pipeline investment. The company's cash position remains robust, with over $565 million in cash and marketable securities as of June 30, and total liquidity exceeding $675 million when including government funding, which management says will support at least three years of planned spending.
The recent partnership payments have provided some relief. Jazz Pharmaceuticals committed $84 million in upfront payments, of which $56 million was received in the second quarter, with an additional payment contingent on a third program starting within the next 12 months. Vertex Pharmaceuticals contributed $28 million upfront, though this agreement was disclosed after the quarter closed.
Short interest in AbCellera stood at 45.1 million shares, representing 19.1% of the float as of July 15, which could amplify the stock's move in either direction on Monday. If the Phase 2 data is positive, the company plans to advance ABCL635 into late-stage development. Conversely, weak results could unravel the recent gains.
The broader market context is also notable. AbCellera's shares have been volatile, and the upcoming data is a critical catalyst. The company's next internal milestone is the Phase 1 data for ABCL575, expected in the fourth quarter, with ABCL386 and ABCL688 projected to begin Phase 1/2 trials in 2027. For now, ABCL635 remains the primary driver of short-term valuation.
Investors should be aware of the risks: the Phase 2 trial's limited size may not fully address durability questions, and even positive results will require larger studies, additional investment, and eventual regulatory approval. As such, Monday's announcement is likely to be a significant inflection point for the stock.
