AT&T Inc. (NYSE:T) is set to report earnings on Wednesday, and the market is intently focused on the company's ability to meet its back-loaded cash flow targets. The telecommunications giant requires between $11.0 billion and $11.5 billion in free cash flow during the second half of the year to achieve its 2026 minimum target of $18 billion.

Initial calculations indicate that approximately 87% of that floor is already absorbed by common dividends and planned share repurchases. The company plans to maintain its annual common dividend at $1.11 per share and target buybacks totaling about $8 billion. Total cash outflows are projected to approach $15.7 billion, leaving a limited buffer of roughly $2.3 billion.

Cash Flow Breakdown

A detailed look at the 2026 cash distribution shows common dividends consuming an estimated $7.7 billion, or 42.8% of the $18 billion minimum. Targeted share repurchases account for about $8.0 billion, representing 44.4%. Other cash needs are estimated at $2.3 billion, or 12.7%.

These early calculations are based on 6.948 billion shares outstanding as of April 22, the annual dividend of $1.11, and a minimum free cash flow of $18 billion. They do not include preferred dividends or subsequent adjustments to the share count.

First-Half Performance and Forecasts

Management reported first-quarter free cash flow of $2.5 billion and forecasted between $4.0 billion and $4.5 billion for the second quarter. This results in projected first-half cash flow ranging from $6.5 billion to $7.0 billion. The second-half requirement therefore represents 61% to 64% of the year's lowest cash output.

On Tuesday, shares closed at $22.26, up 1.4%, prior to the earnings release scheduled for Wednesday at 8:30 a.m. EDT. Trading volume stood at 139.1 million shares, more than double the 50-day average. Over the last five sessions, the stock advanced 4.6%, but remains roughly 25% below its 52-week peak. The annual dividend yield is close to 5.0%.

Market Context and Risks

AT&T's debt load remains a concern. Net debt stood at $126.4 billion at the end of March, with net leverage at 2.71 times. Increased investment in fiber or softer cash generation could erode the remaining buffer. Analysts project adjusted earnings of $0.59 per share and revenue of around $31.8 billion. Predicted postpaid phone additions fall between 287,000 and 338,500.

First-quarter performance was robust, with Advanced Connectivity service revenue increasing by 3.6% and net internet additions totaling 584,000. However, free cash flow declined to $2.5 billion from $3.1 billion due to higher investment. Chief Financial Officer Pascal Desroches described the company's strategy as balancing investment in fiber and 5G while maintaining consistent returns to shareholders.

Peer updates are also on the horizon. T-Mobile US Inc. (NASDAQ:TMUS) will release results Thursday, and Verizon Communications Inc. (NYSE:VZ) is scheduled to report Friday. Their churn, pricing, and expenditure figures will enable clearer comparisons across the industry.
