AT&T (NYSE:T) shares edged higher on Monday, gaining 0.5% to $21.93 as the telecommunications giant prepares to report second-quarter earnings and provide a crucial update on its free cash flow trajectory. Investors are closely watching whether the company can meet its full-year target of at least $18 billion in free cash flow, which underpins its capital return program.

Capital Return Commitments

Initial estimates indicate that annualized dividends and planned share repurchases total approximately $15.7 billion. This figure represents about 87% of the minimum cash flow target, underscoring the importance of hitting the $18 billion threshold. Based on Monday's market capitalization of $154 billion, that minimum translates to a free-cash-flow yield of 11.7%. AT&T shares remain priced at just 7.4 times trailing earnings, a significant discount compared to peers.

Quarterly Expectations

According to FactSet (NYSE:FDS) consensus, analysts project second-quarter revenue of $31.8 billion and earnings per share of $0.589. This would represent a year-over-year decline from $0.619 in EPS, while revenue is expected to increase by roughly 3.1%. The company reported free cash flow of $2.5 billion in the first quarter and has guided for second-quarter free cash flow in the range of $4 billion to $4.5 billion.

If the midpoint of that guidance is achieved, AT&T would have generated approximately $6.5 billion in free cash flow through the first half of 2026, leaving at least $11 billion to $11.5 billion to be generated in the second half. This would account for 61% to 64% of the yearly minimum, highlighting the back-end-loaded nature of the company's cash generation.

Valuation and Peer Comparison

AT&T's valuation gap relative to its peers remains pronounced. The stock trades at a multiple about 30% lower than Verizon Communications (NYSE:VZ), which closed at $43.48, down 0.3%, and approximately 64% lower than T-Mobile US (NASDAQ:TMUS), which gained 1.1% to $194.49. Verizon has a market capitalization of $183 billion and a trailing P/E of 10.6x, while T-Mobile is valued at $214.2 billion with a trailing P/E of 20.7x. The discount reflects the market's heightened focus on AT&T's cash generation ability.

Capital Investment and Network Expansion

AT&T's capital investment totaled $5.1 billion in the first quarter, up from $4.5 billion in the same period last year. The company attributed the decline in cash flow to an accelerated rollout of fiber-optic infrastructure. In a Monday update, AT&T reported over $430 million invested since 2023 in more than 1,500 network projects. Network head Robert Walters credited the progress to "years of focused investment, preparation and execution."

Analyst Outlook

RBC Capital Markets lowered its price target on AT&T to $27 from $31 on Monday, while maintaining an Outperform rating. The revised target still implies roughly 23% upside from Monday's closing price. The adjustment reflects near-term uncertainties but a positive long-term view.

Key Risks

Investors face several risks that could impact cash flow, including increased network investment, slower subscriber growth, or more aggressive promotional activity. AT&T reported $126.4 billion in net debt as of March 31. If cash flow comes in at the upper end of guidance, it will ease pressure in the second half. Falling short would strain the capital return coverage, a key measure investors will scrutinize when results are released.

AT&T will announce its second-quarter results ahead of Wednesday's market open, with a conference call scheduled for 8:30 a.m. ET.
