Bitcoin's recent rally is facing fresh scrutiny as exchange-traded fund (ETF) demand shows signs of cooling. After a 7.5% surge in July, the cryptocurrency has entered August with a subdued tone, slipping 0.7% to $62,473 by Saturday. The pause in U.S. spot ETF trading for the weekend has left the market in a state of anticipation, with investors weighing the sustainability of the recent gains.

ETF Flows: A Tale of Two Months

Data aggregated from Farside's daily flow reports reveals a stark contrast between price action and fund interest. While Bitcoin appreciated by roughly 7.5% in July, U.S. spot ETFs attracted just $172.8 million in net inflows for the entire month. This figure is minuscule compared to the outflows seen in the preceding two months, which totaled $6.92 billion in May and June combined. The July inflows represent only 2.5% of those losses, suggesting that the recent price stability may be more attributable to reduced selling pressure than to robust new demand.

Historical August Weakness

Seasonal patterns add a layer of caution. Since 2013, August has been a challenging month for Bitcoin, with nine out of 13 Augusts ending in the red. The median return for the month is a stark -7.49%, while the average return is a modest +1.12%, skewed by a single outlier: the 65.32% surge in August 2017. In contrast, the last four Augusts have all seen declines, with an average drop of 10.07%. If Bitcoin were to replicate the median historical decline from its current price, it would fall to approximately $57,800.

Market Positioning: Leverage Reduction Provides Support

Analysts at Bitfinex point to reduced leverage as a key stabilizing factor. Following a deleveraging event in late June, daily liquidation volumes have remained well below the 2026 average of $400 million to $500 million. This reduction in leveraged positions has diminished the frequency of automatic sell-offs, potentially cushioning the downside.

Macro Backdrop: Fed in Focus

The broader macroeconomic environment remains a critical determinant. The Federal Reserve held its benchmark rate steady at 3.50%-3.75% on July 29, with three members favoring a 25-basis-point hike. Markets are currently pricing a 67% probability of a quarter-point increase in September. Rising real yields and a firmer dollar could exert additional pressure on Bitcoin, which offers no yield. The upcoming July jobs report, scheduled for release on Friday, August 7, will be closely watched for clues on the Fed's next move.

Analyst Outlook: Choppy Waters Ahead

Lacie Zhang, a research analyst at Bitget Wallet, expects a lack of clear direction. "Base case is a choppy August with bitcoin range-bound unless real yields fall or ETF flows turn consistently positive again," she told Reuters. This sentiment is echoed by the options market, which implies a one-standard-deviation price swing of approximately $5,900 for CME August options, suggesting a potential trading range of $56,600 to $68,300.

Key Levels and Technicals

Bitcoin's current price sits 2.8% below its 200-day moving average of $64,181. A sustained move above this level would signal a strengthening of medium-term momentum, while failure to do so could invite further downside. The recent week has seen a 2.9% decline, erasing some of the July gains.

Risks and Considerations

Several risks could derail the current trajectory. The seasonal dataset is limited, and ETF flows can reverse course in a single session. Additionally, rising real yields, a stronger dollar, or security-related sell-offs could add downward pressure. Investors will be watching Monday's ETF flow data for signs of whether July's momentum has attracted sustained interest or if demand remains fragile.
