Bitcoin traded near $83,000 on Sunday, but the calm was isolated. Ether, XRP, and Solana remained 7% to 10% lower over the past seven days, underscoring a stark divergence within the cryptocurrency market.

At 09:48 EDT, only two of five tracked major cryptocurrencies were higher over 24 hours, and all five were down for the week. Bitcoin’s relative resilience—losing 4.65 percentage points less than Ether and 7.08 points less than Solana over seven days—signals that investors are concentrating in the largest token rather than seeking broad exposure.

ETF Flows Reflect Caution

U.S. spot bitcoin exchange-traded funds are set to reopen Monday after a bruising week. Farside Investors recorded $678.9 million in net outflows across the five sessions ending October 9. Wednesday and Thursday alone saw $729 million in redemptions, before a modest $21.1 million inflow on Friday—recovering just 2.9% of the prior two-day outflow.

Friday’s inflow was narrow: BlackRock’s IBIT added $22.4 million and HODL contributed $2.3 million, while FBTC lost $3.6 million. Most other products were unchanged.

Leverage Unwind Adds Pressure

The selloff was amplified by leveraged positions. CoinDesk reported $1.19 billion in liquidations, including over $1 billion in long positions. Ether accounted for $356 million of that total, versus bitcoin’s $298 million—further evidence of altcoin-specific stress.

Macro Backdrop and Yield Competition

Traditional markets offered a mixed picture. The S&P 500 gained 1.2% last week, while the Russell 2000 slipped 0.9%. Utilities and consumer staples led, with technology lagging. The 10-year Treasury yield ended Friday at 5.24%, down four basis points from October 2. The dollar index rose 0.27% to 102.21, and Brent crude settled at $104.72 a barrel.

IG chief technical analyst Axel Rudolph noted that “fading ETF demand, a deteriorating macroeconomic backdrop and rapidly rising yields” were weighing on bitcoin. He identified a support zone between $82,814 and $82,035.

Coinbase in Focus

The listed-market readthrough centers on Coinbase Global (NASDAQ: COIN). Its shares rose 4.3% Friday to $179.39, defying the weekly crypto retreat. Monday’s open will test whether that equity rebound can survive weaker token breadth.

Analyst targets for Coinbase span from $149 (Barclays, Sell) to $280 (Citizens JMP, Buy), a range of $131 that equals 73% of Friday’s share price—a measure of uncertainty, not a promised return.

What to Watch

Monday’s ETF creations and redemptions will reveal whether the weekend hold had institutional support. Wednesday’s 08:30 EDT consumer-price report will then test whether the 5.24% yield anchor can hold. Risks include thin weekend liquidity overstating stability, renewed ETF outflows, hotter inflation, or another oil shock that could break $80,000. Conversely, strong fund inflows or lower yields could quickly reverse altcoin underperformance.
