Bitdeer Technologies Group (NASDAQ:BTDR) experienced a notable surge on Friday, with shares climbing 15.39% to close at $12.97. The stock touched an intraday high of $12.99, and trading volume reached 18.66 million shares, more than double the previous session's activity. This rally follows a series of announcements that have expanded the company's artificial intelligence (AI) cloud capacity narrative, but a closer look reveals a story of potential rather than confirmed revenue.
The catalyst for the surge was a September 16 operational update, which detailed the company's growing AI infrastructure. Bitdeer now reports 206.5 megawatts (MW) of secured AI-cloud capacity, representing 59% of its first-quarter 2028 target of 350 MW. This includes a new 65.1 MW addition at its A202 facility in Johor, Malaysia, under a ten-year data-center services agreement. However, it's crucial to note that the company's much-touted $7 billion AI pipeline is a management estimate, not a backlog of signed contracts. Neither the A201 nor A202 sites have secured customer offtake agreements yet.
In a September 14 release, Chief Financial Officer Michael Potter indicated that A201 is in "advanced negotiations" and that Bitdeer is seeking customer prepayments to cover more than half of the related capital expenditures. The remainder would be funded through secured financing and operating cash flow. This funding strategy is critical, as the company's recent financials reveal a tension between growth ambitions and current profitability.
For the second quarter, Bitdeer reported revenue of $228.8 million, a 47.0% increase year-over-year. However, cost of revenue reached $237.3 million, resulting in a gross loss of $8.5 million. The company's cash and restricted cash position stood at $496.3 million. Friday's closing market value of $3.53 billion equates to roughly 7.1 times that cash balance, suggesting investors are pricing in significant future growth from the AI initiatives.
Capacity Breakdown
Bitdeer's AI-cloud capacity is spread across three facilities in Malaysia:
- A102: 9.5 MW, fully contracted, expected service in Q1 2027, with more than $800 million in expected revenue over five years.
- A201: 21.7 MW, no offtake yet, advanced talks, expected service in January 2027, with 133 GB300 racks procured.
- A202: 65.1 MW, no offtake yet, expected service in Q3 2027, under a ten-year data-center services agreement.
While these figures represent significant secured capacity, they measure infrastructure, not signed customer demand. The company still needs to convert its pipeline into binding contracts to validate the current valuation.
Mining Business Remains Core
Bitdeer's bitcoin mining operations continue to provide the current revenue base. August production rose to 1,310 bitcoin, up from 1,190 in July, and self-mining hash rate increased to 79.9 exahashes per second. The recent rebound in bitcoin prices also provided a tailwind for mining stocks, but Bitdeer's AI narrative was the primary driver of Friday's move.
Analyst Divergence
Wall Street analysts remain generally positive on Bitdeer, but their price targets vary widely, reflecting uncertainty about contract conversion, capital needs, and bitcoin exposure. Current recommendations include:
- Rosenblatt: Buy, $25 target (Sept. 15)
- Barclays: Overweight, $15 target (Aug. 20)
- KBW: Market Perform, $10 target (Aug. 13)
- B. Riley: Buy, $21 target (Aug. 13)
- Needham: Buy, $20 target (Aug. 11)
- Benchmark: Buy, $22 target (Aug. 6)
KBW's $10 target implies a 22.9% downside from Friday's close, while Rosenblatt's $25 target suggests a 92.8% upside. This wide spread highlights the binary nature of the AI opportunity.
Risks Ahead
Key risks include the possibility that Bitdeer fails to secure offtake agreements for A201 or A202 on expected terms. Construction delays, power availability issues, or GPU supply chain disruptions could also push back timelines. Additionally, the company's share count has increased by 32% over the past year, indicating dilution as a potential funding source.
The next major test will come with Bitdeer's third-quarter earnings report, expected on November 9. Investors will be looking for progress on customer prepayments and project financing arrangements. Until then, the stock's valuation reflects a bet on the company's ability to execute on its AI vision, not on confirmed revenue streams.
