Circle Internet Group (NYSE:CRCL) shares closed Friday at $62.36, posting a weekly gain of 3.1% after a volatile period that saw the stock drop 12.3% from Tuesday's close. The recovery marks a notable reversal, underscoring the market's focus on the company's sensitivity to interest rate movements.
The stock experienced a sharp selloff midweek, declining 6.9% on Wednesday and 6.0% on Thursday, following strong gains of 8.3% on Monday and 8.6% on Tuesday. On Friday, shares edged up 0.3% on volume of 8.29 million shares, which was 31.8% below the weekly average, according to preliminary data.
Investors are closely watching the Federal Reserve's upcoming meeting on July 28-29, which will provide a key test of Circle's interest rate exposure. Preliminary estimates indicate that a 25-basis-point change in yield could alter quarterly net reserve income by roughly $17 million, based on the company's reported Q1 net reserve margin of 38%.
Circle reported first-quarter reserve income of $653 million, with an average USDC circulation of $75.2 billion and a reserve return rate of 3.5%. As of July 23, USDC circulation stood at $72.9 billion, a 5.3% decline from the quarter-end balance of $77.0 billion.
Analysts have divergent views on the stock. Clear Street lowered its price target to $128 from $157 on Friday, maintaining a Buy rating. The revised target implies a 105% upside from Friday's close. In contrast, Mizuho Securities reiterated an Underperform rating with a $50 price target, citing potential disruption from Open USD. Mizuho also raised its 2027 distribution cost estimate to 73% from 64% and cut its adjusted EBITDA forecast to $699 million, roughly 25% below consensus.
Coinbase Global (NASDAQ:COIN), Circle's primary distributor, is scheduled to report earnings after Thursday's market close. Mizuho noted that Coinbase's revenue-sharing agreement with Circle is likely due for renewal in August, making its stablecoin commentary a key early signal for Circle investors.
Circle is set to release its second-quarter results on August 5 at 8 a.m. ET. Key metrics to watch include USDC average circulation, reserve yield, and net reserve margin. Risks include rapid changes in USDC supply, competitive pressures, distribution agreement terms, regulatory developments, and crypto market volatility.
With no earnings report due next week, the focus will be on margin discovery. The Federal Reserve's decision and Coinbase's earnings will help determine whether the stock trends toward the $50 or $128 end of the analyst target range.
