Coherent Corp, a leading photonics components manufacturer based in Saxonburg, Pennsylvania, announced on Wednesday the launch of a new high-speed receiver chip and test equipment aimed at the rapidly evolving artificial intelligence data center market. New Products Target AI Infrastructure Demands

The centerpiece of the announcement is the CHR1074, a quad-channel transimpedance amplifier that supports data rates of 224 gigabits per second per channel. This component is specifically engineered for use in 800-gigabit and 1.6-terabit optical transceivers, which are becoming increasingly critical as AI training and inference workloads reshape data center architecture. According to company specifications, the TIA can return to full operational performance from an idle state in just 50 nanoseconds, addressing latency concerns in dynamic network environments.

Expanding Test and Measurement Capabilities

Alongside the new amplifier, Coherent introduced the WaveMaker 4000A, a programmable optical spectrum synthesizer designed for testing Super C-band dense wavelength-division multiplexing (DWDM) systems. This technology enables multiple data signals to travel simultaneously over a single optical fiber using different wavelengths of light. The company indicates an eight-week lead time for this new instrument.

Both products are scheduled for their official debut at the Optical Fiber Communication Conference and Exhibition (OFC) in Los Angeles from March 15 to 19, 2026. Coherent's Chief Technology Officer, Julie Eng, is slated to deliver a plenary session at the event, while other company executives will participate in panels discussing the scaling of optical links for AI and cloud infrastructure.

In a significant financial development, Coherent recently disclosed in an SEC filing that it completed a $2 billion share sale to Nvidia, with the chip giant purchasing 7,788,161 shares at $256.80 each. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang characterized the partnership as breaking ground in "next-generation silicon photonics," while Coherent CEO Jim Anderson highlighted the deepened relationship after two decades of collaboration.

Concurrently, Bloomberg Indices announced that Coherent will join the Bloomberg 500 index effective March 12, prior to the market open. The inclusion is part of the index's regular quarterly reshuffling, which also sees optical components peers Lumentum and Ciena added to the benchmark. Despite the product announcements and strategic investment, Coherent's stock declined approximately 9% on Thursday afternoon. Lumentum shares also fell around 8% during the same session, while Broadcom moved in the opposite direction, climbing over 3%.

Industry observers note that product launches don't guarantee immediate design wins. Transceiver manufacturers typically spend multiple quarters qualifying receiver chips and evaluating test equipment. Any shortcomings in power consumption, packaging, or signal integrity can redirect orders to competitors or slow adoption timelines.
