NEW YORK, July 22, 2026, 12:02 p.m. EDT — The Dow Jones Industrial Average advanced 141.81 points in late morning trading, reaching 52,366.45, a gain of 0.27%. However, the bulk of the move was driven by just two of its highest-priced components, highlighting the index's price-weighted structure.

Caterpillar Inc. (NYSE:CAT) and Goldman Sachs Group Inc. (NYSE:GS) together contributed approximately 99 points, or nearly 70% of the Dow's total net advance. Caterpillar's 1.00% share price increase added 53 points, while Goldman Sachs's 0.70% rise contributed 46 points.

The S&P 500 (INDEXSP:.INX) edged up 0.11%, while the Nasdaq Composite (INDEXNASDAQ:.IXIC) slipped 0.11%, reflecting a mixed session. The Dow touched an intraday high of 52,511.21 earlier in the day before giving back more than half of its peak 287-point gain by 11:45 a.m.

Other top contributors included Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ) with a 1.91% gain adding 29 points, NVIDIA Corp. (NASDAQ:NVDA) rising 2.29% contributing 28 points, and Honeywell International Inc. (NASDAQ:HON) up 1.77% adding 24 points. These five leaders collectively added roughly 180 points, while the remaining 25 Dow members subtracted nearly 38 points.

On the downside, Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ:MSFT) fell 2.31%, subtracting about 55 points, and Salesforce Inc. (NYSE:CRM) dropped 3.12%, losing 32 points. Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) declined 1.52%, reducing the index by 22 points.

Broader market breadth was positive, with gainers outpacing losers on the NYSE by a 1.25-to-1 ratio and on the Nasdaq by 1.29-to-1. Sector performance showed a defensive tilt: materials gained 1.6%, utilities rose 1.2%, while information technology posted the steepest losses.

Oil prices continued to act as a macroeconomic headwind. Brent crude climbed 2.53% to $93.31, briefly exceeding $95. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note rose to 4.642%. Chevron Corp. (NYSE:CVX) gained 0.69% amid higher crude prices, though rising energy costs pose risks to margins and consumer demand across other sectors.

Market pricing indicated nearly a 72% probability that the Federal Reserve will hold interest rates steady at next week's meeting. A Reuters survey of economists also expects rates to remain unchanged through 2026, though participants flagged a persistent risk of further tightening.

Investors now turn attention to earnings from Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOGL) and Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ:TSLA), both due after Wednesday's close. Sam Stovall at CFRA Research noted: "The magnitude of capex spending will be central to both Tesla and Alphabet."

Key risks include a further surge in oil prices that could drive yields higher and reverse cyclical advances, as well as weak outlooks in technology that might reignite the semiconductor downturn. The Dow's price-weighted methodology means the index remains highly sensitive to movements in a few high-priced stocks.
