Hyperliquid's native token, HYPE, is hovering just below its all-time high as a significant token unlock event approaches. Early Sunday, HYPE was trading at $86.98, a mere 1.2% below its record peak of $88.06, according to Hyperliquid's perpetual market data. The scheduled release of 9.92 million tokens, valued at approximately $863 million at current prices, is set to occur on September 6, according to Tokenomist's unlock calendar.
This unlock represents 4.46% of the circulating supply, a figure that could test the strength of HYPE's recent price rally. However, market participants are quick to note that the unlock calendar is not a guarantee of immediate selling. The actual number of tokens claimed by core contributors remains undisclosed, and prior monthly claims have been smaller than the scheduled amounts. Tokenomist's tracker treats the scheduled figure as an estimate until an actual claim is identified.
The token's proximity to its record high is notable. On Hyperliquid, HYPE was trading 3.6% above its previous-day mark, with the market open and active over the weekend. This means the unlock will hit a live market rather than a Monday opening auction. Perpetual open interest stands at nearly 23.76 million tokens, or about $2.07 billion, while 24-hour notional volume reached approximately $218 million, according to Hyperliquid's public market endpoint.
Funding rates are currently positive at 0.00125% per hour, indicating that long positions are paying shorts. While positive funding alone does not prove market crowding, it does increase the cost of holding long positions if the supply shock fails to materialize. The uncertainty lies between vesting and claiming—transferable tokens may remain unsold, and a claim does not establish a sale.
To illustrate the potential impact, consider different claim rates at the current price of $86.98. A 1% claim would amount to 99,200 tokens worth $8.6 million, while a 5% claim would be 496,000 tokens worth $43.1 million. A 10% claim would represent 992,000 tokens at $86.3 million, and a 25% claim would be 2.48 million tokens at $215.7 million. The full schedule of 9.92 million tokens would be worth $862.8 million. These figures are arithmetic scenarios, not forecasts of actual sales.
The scale of the unlock becomes clearer when compared to recent trading activity. The full scheduled amount is roughly four times the last 24 hours of HYPE perpetual volume, though derivatives volume and spot selling are not directly comparable. A 5% claim would be roughly $43 million, a sizeable but not overwhelming amount.
A harder warning comes from company filings. Hyperion DeFi (NASDAQ:HYPD), which holds HYPE, disclosed in its latest annual report that immediate selling around unlock dates could have "significant impacts on the price of HYPE." The filing also notes that about 238 million tokens are reported as vesting to core contributors over several years, a broader program separate from this weekend's scheduled amount.
The circulating supply remains a key valuation hinge. Only 222.45 million HYPE tokens are in circulation out of a maximum supply of one billion, according to CoinGecko. This puts the current market value near $19.35 billion, while a maximum-supply valuation would be near $86.98 billion. The limited float amplifies the impact of any supply influx.
Demand has an internal source as well. Hyperliquid's overview indicates that platform fees fund programmatic HYPE purchases, which could absorb some of the supply. However, these purchases cannot eliminate the timing risk associated with contributor distributions. The most useful signal will be the actual claim amount, followed by exchange deposits and spot volume trends.
If a full claim materializes, rising exchange inflows combined with positive funding and elevated open interest could leave leveraged longs more exposed. Conversely, a muted claim and steady funding would suggest that buyers have absorbed the event, potentially supporting the price near its record. HYPE's proximity to its all-time high makes this test particularly visible to traders.
The main risk remains disclosure lag. Claims, transfers, and sales are separate events, and on-chain labels can be revised. Given HYPE's high volatility, all calculations will move with the price, making real-time monitoring essential for market participants.
