Jersey Mike’s Topples Chick-fil-A in Customer Satisfaction Rankings

The 2026 American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI) for quick-service restaurants has a new leader. Jersey Mike’s achieved a score of 84 out of 100, surpassing Chick-fil-A, which held the top position for 11 consecutive years with a steady 83. This shift reflects intensifying competition in the fast-food sector, where customer perceptions of value and service are becoming critical differentiators.

Key Drivers Behind Jersey Mike’s Rise

ACSI researchers highlighted Jersey Mike’s strengths in freshness, menu variety, and perceived value. The chain’s rapid expansion—238 net new locations in 2025—and strong digital pickup capabilities also contributed to its top ranking. Systemwide sales reached $4.2 billion, underscoring its growth trajectory. The survey, based on 16,464 email responses collected from April 2025 to March 2026, measures customer satisfaction on a 0-100 scale.

Industry Context: Sales Growth vs. Menu Prices

The broader quick-service environment remains challenging. ACSI reported that chain restaurant sales grew only 3% in 2025, while menu prices increased by 3.8%. This divergence has pressured real demand, forcing chains to demonstrate consistent service quality to justify higher costs. Forrest Morgeson, associate professor of marketing at Michigan State University and former ACSI research director, noted that while overall sector scores were stable, “real movement” occurred beneath the surface. “Price still matters,” Morgeson said, but consistency is now a key differentiator among leaders.

Competitive Landscape

Chick-fil-A retained its 83 score, remaining the highest-ranked chicken chain and a strong contender. Jimmy John’s and Panda Express tied for third place with scores of 81. The inclusion of a sandwich category in the ACSI for the first time brought Jersey Mike’s and Jimmy John’s into the ranking, altering the competitive dynamics.

Challenges and Opportunities

Jersey Mike’s victory comes with caveats. The chain won by only one point, and rapid growth can strain store-level consistency, a risk noted by analysts. Additionally, ACSI found that mobile app quality dipped slightly as more customers rely on apps for orders and discounts. Quick-service chains also face growing competition from convenience stores and supermarkets, which are attracting value-conscious diners.

Jersey Mike’s acknowledged its franchise owners and staff in a company statement, emphasizing that growth must be paired with strong execution. The chain’s recent acquisition by Blackstone for approximately $8 billion (including debt) signals private equity’s continued interest in franchise operators and is expected to support further domestic and international expansion.

Outlook

The shift at the top of the ACSI ranking is less about Chick-fil-A’s decline and more about a more competitive landscape. A brand can maintain solid scores yet lose the top spot if a fast-growing rival offers a sharper value proposition with fewer operational hiccups. As diners become more selective, consistency and perceived value will likely determine future leaders in the quick-service segment.
