Shares of Keel Infrastructure Corp. (NASDAQ:KEEL) experienced a dramatic surge on Wednesday, climbing as much as 30% following the disclosure that BlackRock Inc. (NYSE:BLK) holds an 8.4% stake in the company. The stock was last trading at $4.1264, up 29.8% in afternoon trading, as U.S. markets continued to show strength across technology and infrastructure sectors.

The rally added approximately $571 million to Keel's market capitalization, based on the company's 603.83 million outstanding shares. BlackRock's reported position, valued at roughly $210 million at current prices, was filed via a Schedule 13G with the SEC on Wednesday, though the effective date of ownership was June 30, not the filing date. The filing indicates the stake was acquired in the ordinary course of business and does not signal an intent to control the company.

Index Inclusion and Broader Market Context

The timing of the disclosure comes just one trading day after Keel was added to the Russell 3000 index, suggesting that index-related buying may have contributed to the move. However, the filing alone does not confirm causation. CEO Ben Gagnon had previously stated that the company was seeking a broader investor base, a goal that appears to be materializing.

Keel's surge was part of a wider rally among digital-infrastructure and power-exposed stocks. The Nasdaq Composite rose nearly 2% as technology stocks rebounded. Peer companies also posted significant gains: IREN Ltd. (NASDAQ:IREN) rose 26.5%, Hut 8 Corp. (NASDAQ:HUT) advanced 20.4%, TeraWulf Inc. (NASDAQ:WULF) climbed 19.8%, MARA Holdings Inc. (NASDAQ:MARA) increased 18.4%, and HIVE Digital Technologies Ltd. (NASDAQ:HIVE) jumped 17.6%.

Short Squeeze Potential and Trading Volume

Trading volume on Keel reached 43.9 million shares by early afternoon, approaching the 65-day average. As of July 15, 103.6 million shares were held short, representing 17.25% of the available float. The day's volume accounted for approximately 42% of the total short position, indicating significant pressure on bearish traders, though intraday data does not confirm a short squeeze.

Analyst sentiment remains mixed. KBW's Stephen Glagola raised his price target to $4.50, reiterating a Market Perform rating. He cited positive demand for high-performance computing (HPC) colocation but flagged risks related to funding and tenant commitments. The consensus target from eight analysts stands at $7.00, while the stock's 52-week high is $7.37. Convertible note conversion rates are set at $7.41, and the capped call maximum is $11.86.

Financial Performance and Strategic Shift

Keel's most recent revenue was still heavily dependent on its legacy cryptocurrency mining business. In the first quarter of 2026, cryptocurrency mining accounted for 80.8% of total revenue, which fell 22.4% year-over-year to $36.99 million. The company reported a net loss of $145.35 million, a 161.6% increase from the prior year's $55.55 million loss. Operating loss widened to $98.39 million from $34.84 million.

In June, Keel bolstered its balance sheet by issuing $458 million in 1.25% convertible notes due 2032, netting approximately $445.4 million after underwriting discounts. Management stated that current liquidity is expected to cover development costs for the Panther Creek, Sharon, and Moses Lake projects through leasing arrangements, though no lease agreements, construction timelines, or profitability projections have been confirmed.

Risks and Outlook

The company cautions that its pivot to high-performance computing may not succeed or generate profits. Projects face potential funding gaps, delays, cost overruns, and customer default risks. Volatility in bitcoin prices continues to affect the legacy mining segment.

Investors will look to the next major catalyst on August 10, when Keel is scheduled to report second-quarter earnings before the market opens, followed by a conference call at 8 a.m. EDT. Key areas of focus will include lease updates, capital expenditures, and progress on the company's 2.2-gigawatt project pipeline.
