In a dramatic session on Thursday, Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) saw its market capitalization balloon by nearly $450 billion, setting a new record, while Meta Platforms (NASDAQ:META) experienced an estimated $120 billion decline. The divergence underscores a growing investor preference for companies that can translate AI investments into tangible cash generation.

Despite Meta reporting a 28% increase in revenue versus Microsoft's 18%, the market's reaction was starkly different. The key differentiator was cash conversion. Microsoft's free cash flow was 25 times that of Meta, with only 32% higher stated capital expenditure. The combined market value swing approached $570 billion, according to preliminary calculations.

Microsoft's shares closed up 15.51% at $451.10, pushing its market value to $3.35 trillion. Meta, in contrast, fell 7.95% to $539.03, trimming its valuation to about $1.37 trillion. The moves rippled through the broader market, with the Nasdaq climbing 2.78%, the S&P 500 adding 1.66%, and the Dow Jones gaining 1.19%.

Both companies reported for periods ending June 30. Microsoft's fiscal Q4 revenue reached $90.01 billion, an 18% year-over-year increase, with operating income of $40.60 billion and a 45% operating margin. Meta's calendar Q2 revenue was $60.80 billion, up 28%, but operating income was $18.78 billion, reflecting a 31% margin and a 13% decline in GAAP EPS. The margin compression was exacerbated by $2.40 billion in legal charges and $1.18 billion in severance costs.

The cash flow picture was particularly telling. Microsoft generated $55.40 billion in operating cash flow, leaving $19.60 billion in free cash after $41.00 billion in capital expenditures. Meta produced $31.86 billion in operating cash flow but spent $31.08 billion on capex, leaving just $0.784 billion in free cash. Meta's free cash flow margin was a razor-thin 1.3% versus Microsoft's 21.8%, and its year-over-year free cash flow plummeted 91%.

Investors rewarded Microsoft's residual cash reserves over Meta's growth trajectory. Microsoft's commercial remaining performance obligations surged 84% to $678 billion, or 25% excluding OpenAI contributions. Azure revenue grew 43%, with guidance for approximately 45% constant-currency growth in the current quarter. The company also reported over 30 million paid seats for Microsoft 365 Copilot, with CEO Satya Nadella emphasizing customers can “turn tokens into business results.”

Meta's ad business remains robust, with ad impressions up 14% and average price per ad up 12%, while daily active users reached 3.60 billion, a 3% increase. However, its AI monetization strategy appears less defined. Executives mentioned enterprise services and compute sales but offered no near-term revenue specifics. Josh Gilbert, lead analyst for Asia-Pacific at eToro, noted Meta is “spending like a hyperscaler without a hyperscaler’s business model.”

Looking ahead, capital expenditures will stay elevated. Microsoft projects over $50 billion in Q1 capex and roughly $175 billion for calendar 2026 after a lease reclassification. Meta trimmed its 2026 projection to between $130 billion and $145 billion, with Q3 revenue guidance of $61 billion to $64 billion. Microsoft's rally also surpassed Nvidia's (NASDAQ:NVDA) previous record of a $441 billion single-day gain set on April 9, 2025.

Risks remain. Microsoft expects higher capex in fiscal 2027, Meta faces potential significant losses from youth-related legal proceedings in the U.S., and any softening in AI demand could challenge both companies' investment strategies.
