COPENHAGEN – In a market session marked by divergent trading venues, Novo Nordisk (NYSE:NVO) saw its U.S.-listed shares decline sharply on Tuesday, even as the company reported second-quarter results that exceeded analyst expectations. The ADR fell 6.8% during intraday trading on the New York Stock Exchange, settling at $43.87 by late afternoon. Meanwhile, the company's Copenhagen-listed B shares (CPH:NOVO-B) finished the day up 1.75% at DKK 307.60, before the earnings release hit the wires after the Danish market closed at 17:00 local time.

The disconnect between the two trading venues highlights a significant pricing gap. With Copenhagen closed, New York served as the primary venue for price discovery, and the initial reaction gap between the two listings stood at 8.6 percentage points. This sets the stage for a potentially volatile open on Wednesday for Danish investors, who will be catching up to the news.

Earnings Beat, but Quality Concerns Persist

Novo Nordisk's adjusted operating profit for the second quarter came in at DKK 33.389 billion, a 16.2% beat over the consensus estimate. Adjusted sales reached DKK 78.488 billion, up 7% on a constant currency basis, while adjusted operating profit grew 11%. However, the reported operating profit declined 16% to DKK 27.061 billion, reflecting a DKK 6.3 billion non-cash impairment charge related to pipeline assets.

The gap between adjusted and reported figures is substantial. The operating margin on an adjusted basis was 42.5%, compared to 34.5% on a reported basis—a difference of 8.1 percentage points. The impairment charge alone was 36% larger than the DKK 4.649 billion consensus beat, underscoring why the headline earnings growth did not fully resolve investor skepticism about the quality of the results.

Guidance Raised, but Competitive Pressures Loom

Management raised its full-year 2026 guidance, lifting the midpoint for both adjusted sales and operating profit growth by five percentage points. The new ranges are -6% to 0% for both metrics, up from the previous -12% to -4%. CEO Mike Doustdar cited strong U.S. demand for GLP-1 therapies and continued international rollouts as key drivers behind the upgrade.

However, competitive dynamics remain a concern. Weekly prescriptions for the Wegovy oral pill surpassed 265,000 for the week ending July 17, with cumulative prescriptions exceeding five million since its January launch. Yet, injectable Wegovy continues to trail Eli Lilly's Zepbound by a wide margin—over two-to-one in recent prescription data. Barclays analyst James Gordon noted that Lilly's oral candidate, Foundayo, "doesn't really seem to have impacted the product," though he cautioned that the data may exclude certain distribution channels.

Market Context and Outlook

The broader market showed resilience on Tuesday, with the S&P 500 ETF (SPY) up 1.8%, while the Health Care Select Sector SPDR (XLV) was flat. Eli Lilly's stock edged down 0.3% to $1,118.55. The relative underperformance of Novo's ADR suggests that investors are still weighing the company's recovery prospects against ongoing headwinds.

Key risks include U.S. pricing pressures, Lilly's dominance in the injectable GLP-1 market, and potential pipeline setbacks—such as the recent failure of the ZEUS heart-disease trial, which limits near-term diversification. Management is scheduled to provide an update to investors on Wednesday at 13:00 CEST, with discussions expected to focus on pricing dynamics, refill rates, and the 2027 growth bridge.

As Copenhagen prepares to open, the 8.6-point ADR gap will be the most immediate indicator of whether this earnings report has shifted investor conviction. The coming days will reveal whether the market views the beat as a genuine turning point or a temporary reprieve in a fiercely competitive landscape.
