COPENHAGEN - Novo Nordisk (NYSE: NVO) shares declined 2.9% last week, closing Friday at $45.89, despite the company raising its 2026 outlook earlier in the month. The muted market reaction underscores persistent concerns about long-term growth prospects, even as near-term execution improves.
Wall Street's consensus price target stands at $46.89, implying a modest 2.2% upside from Friday's close. The median target is slightly lower at $45.01, essentially flat versus the current price. Of the 14 analysts tracked, 11 rate the stock as Hold, with only three recommending Strong Buy, reflecting a cautious stance.
Raised Guidance Fails to Convince
On August 4, management raised its 2026 adjusted sales and operating profit growth guidance to a range of 0% to -6% at constant exchange rates (CER). This followed a solid second-quarter performance: sales rose 3% at CER to DKK 78.49 billion, while adjusted operating profit increased 11% on a reported basis to DKK 33.39 billion. First-half sales reached DKK 175.31 billion, up 18% at CER.
Despite these numbers, analysts still forecast a decline in 2026 revenue and earnings. Consensus estimates project 2026 revenue of DKK 296.72 billion, a 3.99% decrease from 2025, and EPS of DKK 21.19, down 7.98%. Growth is expected to return in 2027, but only modestly, with revenue and EPS growth of 2.63% and 3.05%, respectively.
Wegovy Remains the Linchpin
The oral version of Wegovy has been a key growth driver, surpassing five million U.S. prescriptions since its January launch. It has captured approximately 90% of the oral GLP-1 market, according to CEO Mike Doustdar, who told Reuters that the obesity market would not be a "winner-take-all" contest. He expects products to serve different patient segments, with pills potentially representing half of the market by 2030, which could reach around $100 billion.
However, competition from Eli Lilly (NYSE: LLY) is intensifying. The broader market's evolution will be crucial in determining whether Novo can sustain its momentum.
Stock Performance and Valuation
Last week's trading saw shares decline from $47.73 on August 10 to $45.89 on August 14, with volume fluctuating between 7.8 million and 10.8 million shares. The stock closed below both its 50-day and 200-day moving averages, a bearish technical signal.
Novo Nordisk's market capitalization stands at approximately $201.9 billion, with shares trading at 14.9 times forward earnings. This valuation reflects the market's cautious outlook, given the limited upside potential.
Analyst Actions and Key Events
Recent analyst actions include BMO Capital's Evan Seigerman maintaining a Hold with a $47 target, Berenberg's Kerry Holford downgrading to Hold with a $47 target (from $50), and Goldman Sachs' James Quigley cutting the target to $44 from $48. Argus' Jasper Hellweg also holds, though no target was stated.
Investors will watch the ex-dividend date on August 17, with payment on August 25. The next major catalyst is Capital Markets Day on September 20-21, followed by third-quarter results on November 4. These events will test whether the prescription surge can translate into durable earnings growth.
Risks and Opportunities
Key risks include pricing pressure, reimbursement limitations, and faster-than-expected gains by Eli Lilly. Conversely, stronger pill adoption or improved U.S. access could boost forecasts. The stock's fate hinges on whether the company can navigate these challenges and deliver sustained growth beyond 2026.
