Palantir Technologies (NASDAQ:PLTR) shares climbed 6.9% on Monday to close at $131.36, bucking a broader tech downturn as the Invesco QQQ Trust slipped 0.7%. The rally added approximately $21.7 billion to the company's market capitalization, bringing it to $337.8 billion.
The surge came after Oppenheimer analyst Param Singh issued a bullish preliminary estimate, projecting second-quarter revenue growth of 84% to 85%, well above management's midpoint guidance of roughly 79%. Singh reiterated an Outperform rating and a $200 price target, citing Palantir's relative immunity to deal delays affecting other software vendors.
Singh anticipates full-year revenue growth to exceed 75%, compared to Palantir's current projection of 71%. This would push 2026 revenue above $7.832 billion, approximately $176 million higher than the current midpoint. However, even with this optimism, the stock trades at a staggering 44.1 times the midpoint of projected 2026 sales, and roughly 43.1 times Singh's more optimistic scenario.
Monday's advance partially reversed last week's decline. The stock remains 2.6% below its July 20 closing price of $134.85, having recovered about 71% of the drop by Friday.
Key Growth Drivers and Segments
Singh projects U.S. commercial growth to exceed 135%, while U.S. government segment growth is expected in the low 80s. International government demand appears weaker as European customers evaluate regional alternatives. The company's first-quarter results set a high bar, with revenue surging 85% to $1.633 billion, U.S. commercial sales jumping 133%, and U.S. government sales climbing 84%. Adjusted operating margin stood at 60%.
Palantir guided second-quarter revenue between $1.797 billion and $1.801 billion, and in May raised its full-year outlook to $7.650 billion to $7.662 billion. CEO Alex Karp expressed confidence in an "accelerating U.S. market."
Options Market and Earnings Risk
Options pricing implies a 9.6% swing following the August 3 earnings release, translating to an expected move of approximately $12.61 either direction. This sets an implied range between $118.75 and $143.97. However, actual stock movements have lagged expectations after the past two reports: shares fell 5.0% after May earnings and 6.9% after February results.
To satisfy elevated expectations, the August 3 report will need to surpass $1.801 billion in revenue, and investors are looking for a significant upward revision to full-year guidance. Even with Singh's projection, the stock trades at over 43 times projected 2026 sales, leaving limited upside for a standard outperformance.
Broader Market Context and Risks
Palantir's rally came amid a broader recovery in software stocks. ServiceNow (NYSE:NOW) rose 8.9%, Datadog (NASDAQ:DDOG) gained 3.4%, and Snowflake (NYSE:SNOW) added 1.4%. However, the stock's valuation remains a key concern. The $21.7 billion market value added on Monday was roughly 123 times the minimum revenue increase, highlighting the scale of growth investors still expect beyond 2026.
Risks include limited upside for standard outperformance given the high multiple, termination clauses in most contracts, weaker international government demand, and regulatory scrutiny in the UK. A new trial reported no significant progress in hospital discharge efficiency at NHS trusts using Palantir's software, though the company said the study misinterpreted the tool's intended application.
Investors will closely watch the August 3 report for any signs of deceleration or guidance changes that could justify the premium valuation.
