Shares of POET Technologies Inc. (NASDAQ:POET) climbed 7.0% to $9.13 in premarket trading on Friday, extending a five-session rally to 30.6%. The move reflects growing investor confidence after the company bolstered its balance sheet with a recent capital raise, but attention is now turning to the company's ability to convert its pipeline into actual revenue.
POET's estimated pro forma net liquidity stands at approximately $815.7 million, representing 51.8% of the company's implied equity value of nearly $1.58 billion. This figure combines cash and short-term investments from March 31, 2026, with anticipated net proceeds from a May offering, while deducting March liabilities. Notably, it does not account for subsequent cash usage, and second-quarter expenditures are not included.
The improved financial position removes near-term financing pressure, shifting the investment narrative toward operational execution. The company reported revenue of just $1.41 million over the trailing four quarters, underscoring the challenge ahead. Investors are now valuing POET's operating business and growth prospects at roughly $760 million, which translates to an eye-popping 538 times trailing revenue. Achieving such a premium will require a significant ramp in production and order fulfillment.
POET's primary catalyst is its Lumilens deal, announced in May, which includes a first purchase order valued at $50 million and a potential five-year opportunity exceeding $500 million. However, realized revenue will depend on development milestones, customer qualification, and successful scaling of manufacturing. Chief Executive Suresh Venkatesan emphasized that a strong balance sheet enhances POET's credibility in commercial discussions. The company plans to expand production capacity approximately tenfold by 2027.
The broader optical-equipment sector is also seeing renewed momentum. Applied Optoelectronics Inc. (NASDAQ:AAOI) was the top premarket performer, surging 14.1% to $141.79 after reporting an 86% year-over-year increase in second-quarter revenue to $191.9 million, with data-center revenue up 140% to $107.7 million. Lumentum Holdings Inc. (NASDAQ:LITE) and Coherent Corp. (NYSE:COHR) also moved higher, gaining 4.8% and 4.5%, respectively.
Sentiment in the sector is further buoyed by reports that U.S. officials are preparing potential restrictions on upcoming Chinese optical-transceiver models, a move that could benefit domestic suppliers. The plan is still in early stages and may be revised or abandoned, but traders are positioning ahead of a possible policy boost.
Analyst sentiment on POET remains positive but is based on a limited sample. The company currently has just one Buy rating, with an average price target of $20.25, implying 137.4% upside from the August 6 close. In contrast, peers like Applied Optoelectronics, Lumentum, and Coherent have broader analyst coverage and more modest upside targets.
Investors will watch closely next week as Lumentum reports earnings after the close on Tuesday, followed by Coherent after Wednesday's session. These results are expected to provide further insight into AI-driven demand for optical networking components.
Despite the optimism, execution risks remain. Delays in qualification, slow order conversion, increased expenses during scale-up, and potential dilution from warrant exercises could pressure the stock. Additionally, any reversal of proposed U.S. restrictions on Chinese suppliers could dampen sector sentiment. For POET, the key question is whether it can deliver booked revenue to justify its premium valuation.
