Quantum Computing Inc. (NASDAQ: QUBT) saw its recent rally lose momentum as U.S. cash markets remained closed on Friday, August 9, 2026. The stock closed the week at $9.18, reflecting a 13.3% gain, but the pause in trading has shifted investor attention to the company's upcoming second-quarter earnings report, scheduled for release after the market close on Monday.
According to consensus estimates, the company is expected to post revenue of $5.15 million for the quarter, a 39.5% increase from the previous quarter, and a loss of $0.04 per share. However, the quality of revenue remains a concern, as first-quarter results showed that $3.5 million of the $3.7 million total revenue came from acquired businesses, and the gross margin was negative 20%.
One of the most striking aspects of QUBT's current valuation is the significant portion attributed to cash and investments. As of March, the company held $1.41 billion in cash and investments, and after deducting total liabilities, net financial assets stood at approximately $1.39 billion. This represents 67.4% of Friday's market capitalization of $2.06 billion, leaving an adjusted operating value of roughly $671 million.
This cash-adjusted value implies a multiple of 32.6 times the annualized second-quarter consensus revenue. While this is lower than the unadjusted ratio of 99.8 times, it remains a rich valuation for a company with negative gross margins. The company has attributed its gross loss to fixed-cost under-absorption, stating that product margins are expected to improve as production volumes increase.
CEO Yuping Huang expressed confidence in the company's readiness for broader deployment, but Monday's earnings will provide a critical test of whether the technology can translate into profitable operations. The company also completed the NHanced transaction just before the quarter's end, adding complexity to the cash evaluation. The deal included $73.1 million in cash and stock, with potential additional payments of up to $72 million tied to performance milestones.
In the broader quantum computing sector, QUBT's performance last week was solid but lagged its peers. IonQ (NYSE: IONQ) surged 21.9%, Rigetti Computing (NASDAQ: RGTI) gained 20.0%, and D-Wave Quantum (NYSE: QBTS) rose 14.8%. QUBT's 13.3% weekly gain outpaced the Invesco QQQ Trust (NASDAQ: QQQ) but trailed the average of its quantum peers by 5.6 percentage points.
Peer results were mixed. IonQ reported revenue of $80.1 million and raised its 2026 sales outlook, while Rigetti posted $5.14 million in revenue and achieved a positive gross profit. D-Wave fell short of expectations with $3.08 million in revenue and an operating loss of $53.3 million.
Analysts remain largely optimistic ahead of QUBT's report. The consensus rating is Overweight, with a mean price target of $18.33, representing a 99.7% upside from Friday's close. However, the target range of $10 to $30 reflects significant divergence in expectations regarding execution and future value.
Investors will be closely watching gross margin, acquisition impacts, backlog conversion, and the revised investment balance. Risks remain, including ongoing low utilization, integration issues, irregular order flow, and contingent payments that could extend losses and deplete cash reserves. While a revenue beat could drive the stock higher, a meaningful improvement in gross margin would be a more significant catalyst.
