Shares of Société Générale (EPA:GLE) rallied 3.4% on Monday after the French lender unveiled an ambitious long-term profitability roadmap, including a pledge to return more than €21 billion to shareholders over the next four years. The stock traded at €75.05 by 10:22 CEST, up from Friday's close of €72.59, after touching an intraday high of €76.12.
The new plan, presented by CEO Slawomir Krupa, targets a tangible return on equity (ROTE) of 13% to 14% by 2029, a significant step up from the 12.0% reported in the first half of 2026 and the bank's earlier target of around 11% for 2026. The announcement reverses Friday's 2.12% decline and outperforms the broader Paris market.
Capital Return Program
Management indicated that cumulative distributions between 2026 and 2029 could exceed €21 billion. This figure comprises ordinary dividends and share buybacks, with a base payout ratio of 50% of earnings, which alone is expected to generate over €13 billion. An additional €8 billion could be returned through excess capital above a 13% CET1 ratio threshold.
At Monday's market valuation of €56.4 billion, the projected payouts represent approximately 37% of the company's market capitalization, according to TS2 calculations. The announcement was well received by investors, who had been anticipating a more aggressive capital return strategy following a period of underperformance relative to European peers.
Operational Targets
To achieve the new profitability goals, Société Générale plans to keep its cost base below €16.3 billion and reduce its cost-to-income ratio to below 55% by 2029, compared with 59.7% in the first half of 2026. Revenue is expected to grow at an annual compound rate of about 3%, while the cost of risk is projected to remain between 25 and 30 basis points.
The bank's CET1 ratio stood at 13.2% as of June 2026, comfortably above the 13% level that triggers additional capital returns. This buffer provides flexibility to support both growth and shareholder distributions.
Analyst Reactions
Several analysts had already modeled a more optimistic outlook ahead of the announcement. Deutsche Bank, which has a Buy rating and a €86 price target, had forecast ROTE above 13%, 3% revenue growth, and a cost-to-income ratio near 55%. Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs also had targets above the current share price, though those calls predate Monday's full plan.
At €75.05, the stock trades at approximately 9.9 times trailing earnings, a discount to some European banking peers. However, the revised targets could justify a re-rating if management delivers on its promises.
Risks and Next Steps
Execution risks remain. Revenue growth could fall short of the 3% annual target, costs might exceed the €16.3 billion cap, or credit losses could surpass the 30-basis-point ceiling. Investors will get an early test on October 29, when the bank reports third-quarter results, providing fresh data on revenue momentum, cost discipline, and asset quality.
The market's positive reaction underscores the importance of the capital return plan, which addresses a key investor concern. With a clear roadmap and a credible path to higher returns, Société Générale is positioning itself as a more shareholder-friendly institution, though sustained execution will be critical to maintaining the stock's momentum.
