Southwest Airlines is charting a course beyond its traditional domestic stronghold, announcing plans to introduce long-haul international flights within the next five years. The Dallas-based carrier is adding new leisure routes for early 2027 and exploring overseas destinations, signaling a strategic shift aimed at boosting revenue. This move comes on the heels of a record first quarter, where operating revenue reached $7.2 billion, driven by recent changes including assigned seating, extra-legroom options, and bag fees.

New Routes and Schedule Expansion

Southwest has opened bookings through March 10, 2027, with the next schedule release set for July 16, extending ticket sales through April 5, 2027. The early 2027 lineup features sun-drenched destinations such as Buffalo to Miami, Columbus to San Juan, Indianapolis to West Palm Beach, and Nashville to Liberia, Costa Rica—the sole international route in this batch. Additional routes include Manchester to Fort Myers, Pittsburgh to West Palm Beach, Portland (Maine) to Fort Myers, Providence to Sarasota, and Rochester to Fort Lauderdale.

For summer 2025, Southwest will launch services from San Diego to Boston, Austin to Cincinnati, Austin to Seattle, and new Las Vegas flights to Cancun and Los Cabos starting June 4. Daily flights from Ontario to Honolulu also begin June 4, with Burbank to Honolulu, Long Beach to Portland, and Long Beach to Seattle services starting August 4.

Long-Haul International Ambitions

CEO Bob Jordan outlined the long-haul vision at the Bernstein Strategic Decisions Conference, noting that Southwest could satisfy most of its customers' international demand with just eight to 12 destinations. He identified Baltimore as a logical hub for transatlantic routes, though he emphasized the carrier does not intend to replicate the extensive international networks of rivals like United, Delta, or American. Instead, a focused set of long-haul routes could complement Southwest's existing network and appeal to its customer base.

Adam Decaire, senior vice president of network planning, highlighted growth opportunities in Las Vegas, Orlando, and San Diego, citing new facilities in San Diego and Burbank, along with onboard upgrades, as catalysts for expansion in Southern California.

Infrastructure and Partnerships

Southwest's current fleet consists of narrow-body Boeing 737 Max jets, which can reach the U.K. and Ireland from Baltimore. The airline also has partnerships with Icelandair, EVA Air, China Airlines, All Nippon Airways, Philippine Airlines, Condor, and Turkish Airlines, providing a foundation for international connectivity. Long-haul routes could also strengthen the Rapid Rewards loyalty program and co-branded credit card partnerships, which are major profit centers for airlines.

Risks and Challenges

However, the expansion faces headwinds. Rising fuel costs, exacerbated by the Iran conflict, have pressured margins. Moody's recently downgraded its global airline sector outlook to negative. Southwest reported first-quarter fuel costs above guidance and expects second-quarter fuel prices between $4.10 and $4.15 per gallon. Jordan acknowledged that fare hikes have not yet dampened demand, stating there has been "no drop-off in demand at all," but warned that fuel prices could remain elevated. Long-haul plans remain conceptual, with no firm routes, aircraft, or schedules finalized.
