Twilio Inc. (NYSE: TWLO) experienced a remarkable surge in its stock price on Friday, climbing 28.4% to $248.14 in early trading, reaching a new 52-week high of $249.44. The rally came after the company reported second-quarter earnings that exceeded analyst expectations and raised its full-year outlook, signaling robust operational performance.
The company's second-quarter revenue increased 22% year-over-year to $1.499 billion, surpassing the consensus estimate of $1.43 billion by 4.8%. Organic revenue growth, which excludes contributions from acquisitions and certain pass-through fees, came in at 17%, well above the company's prior guidance of 10%-11%. Non-GAAP earnings per share reached $1.47, beating the consensus of $1.32 by 11.4%.
Profitability metrics were equally impressive. Twilio reported a free cash flow margin of 24%, a significant improvement from the previous year. Free cash flow totaled $352.6 million, up 33.8% from $263.5 million in the same period last year. Non-GAAP operating income also exceeded guidance, coming in at $284.6 million versus the projected range of $250-$260 million.
The company's quarterly Rule-of-40 proxy, a key metric that combines organic growth and free cash flow margin, hit 41, the highest reading in the last five quarters. This compares to 25 in the first quarter of 2026 and readings between 31 and 34 in the prior three quarters. The improvement was driven by both stronger organic growth and a higher free cash flow margin, indicating a healthier balance between growth and profitability.
Twilio also reported a dollar-based net expansion rate of 116%, up from 108% in the previous quarter, reflecting increased spending from existing customers. Stock-based compensation as a percentage of revenue declined to 9.5% from 12.1% a year earlier, reducing dilution pressure on shareholders.
Management raised its full-year guidance across all key metrics. The company now expects reported revenue growth of 18%-18.5% (up from 14%-15% previously) and organic revenue growth of 13%-13.5% (up from 9.5%-10.5%). Non-GAAP operating income and free cash flow guidance were each increased by $55 million to $1.135-$1.155 billion.
CEO Khozema Shipchandler described the quarter as “a powerful new chapter” for the company, highlighting rising organic growth, record-high profitability, and record levels of free cash flow. The strong results were driven by continued adoption of Twilio's communications platform, with particular strength in AI voice use cases, though these remain a relatively small part of the business.
Analysts were largely positive on the results. William Blair analyst Arjun Bhatia noted that “AI voice use-cases are building,” though voice accounts for less than 15% of revenue, limiting its current impact. Of the 34 analysts covering Twilio, 27 have Buy or Overweight ratings, with target prices ranging from $165 to $330.
Despite the strong performance, some caution is warranted. The stock is now trading near the median analyst price target of $252.50, leaving limited upside. Additionally, the company's third-quarter organic growth guidance of 11%-12% represents a slowdown from the second quarter's 17% pace. The Rule-of-40 proxy is based on a single quarter and could be influenced by working capital timing. Nonetheless, the market's reaction underscores investor confidence in Twilio's trajectory.
