In a striking display of investor enthusiasm, retail subscriptions for Unitree Robotics' initial public offering on Shanghai's STAR Market reached a staggering 8,288.82 times the shares available for online allocation. The overwhelming demand has priced the humanoid robot manufacturer at approximately 219 times its projected 2025 earnings, translating into a market valuation exceeding 60 billion yuan (roughly $9 billion).
The final allotment rate for online investors was a mere 0.01809759%, meaning that out of every 5,526 applications, only one was successful. Retail investors collectively placed orders for 53.64 billion shares, far exceeding the 40.45 million new shares originally designated for the online tranche. This scarcity premium underscores the market's eagerness to gain exposure to one of China's most prominent robotics firms.
Offer Details and Clawback Provision
Unitree set its offer price at 150.80 yuan per share, with the company issuing 40,446,434 new shares, representing at least 10% of its post-deal capital. Gross proceeds from the offering are estimated at 6.10 billion yuan (around $904 million). The online subscription ratio triggered a clawback mechanism, which transferred 3.236 million shares from institutional investors to retail, boosting the online portion to 9.707 million shares while reducing the offline allocation to 22.650 million shares.
The Shanghai Stock Exchange reported that 9,784,646 online accounts were eligible to participate, reflecting the broad retail interest. This IPO marks the first listing of a humanoid-robot manufacturer on mainland China's stock market, according to Reuters.
Valuation and Financial Performance
The valuation has raised eyebrows among analysts. At the offer price, Unitree's price-to-earnings ratio stands at 219 times expected 2025 earnings, and 36 times sales. To bring the P/E down to a more conventional 50 times, the company's earnings would need to increase more than fourfold. Unitree's revenue surged to nearly 1.7 billion yuan in 2025, a fourfold increase, with adjusted net profit around 600 million yuan. Overseas markets contributed over 40% of revenue in every reporting period.
Despite the impressive growth, the majority of humanoid robot demand still comes from universities and government-backed projects, with applications centered on education, research, and demonstrations. Reliability, dexterity, and endurance challenges continue to limit broader commercial adoption. Wang Zhuo, partner at Shanghai Zhuozhu Investment Management, cautioned that "the IPO is expensive, and the investment risk is already quite high," noting that wider usage remains a distant prospect.
Analyst and Strategic Backer Perspectives
SWS Research warned that elevated valuations could lead to a reset in robotics stock prices, potentially influencing the pricing of other robotics-related equities. Xiangcai Securities commented that Unitree needs to "keep growing rapidly to justify its rich valuations." The company's strategic investors include DeepSeek, which acquired 933,399 shares (2.31% of the strategic allotment) for 140.8 million yuan, with plans to collaborate on AI models, mechanical engineering, and motion control.
Meituan held a 9.65% stake before the offering, while HongShan Capital and Matrix Partners owned 7.11% and 5.45%, respectively. State-backed funds also hold minor positions. The backing of these prominent investors adds credibility but also raises expectations for rapid commercialization.
Risks and Future Outlook
Data collection remains a significant hurdle for training humanoid models, as physical-world datasets are expensive and limited. Demonstrations on hardware have yet to prove consistent performance in factory or service settings. Additionally, export restrictions could impact Unitree's substantial US operations, and local demand may still depend on research funding. Any shortfall in delivery, reliability, or margins would be amplified by the 219-times earnings ratio.
Successful investors must complete payment for their allocations by 16:00 CST on August 12. The listing date has not yet been announced. As trading approaches, the key indicator remains the one-in-5,526 chance of allocation at a valuation that already prices in substantial future growth. The IPO's success will be closely watched as a barometer for the humanoid robotics sector's commercial viability.
