Veeva Systems (NYSE: VEEV) experienced a significant after-hours rally on Wednesday, with shares advancing 8.24% to $265.09, up from the closing price of $244.91. The surge added approximately $3.28 billion to the company's market capitalization, nearly doubling its projected annual operating cash flow and representing a substantial premium over the modest increase in revenue guidance.
Strong Quarterly Results Drive Optimism
The life-sciences software provider reported fiscal second-quarter revenue of $928.0 million, an 18% increase year-over-year and surpassing the analyst consensus of $905.4 million by 2.5%. Adjusted earnings per share came in at $2.35, exceeding the $2.22 estimate. Subscription revenue, a key metric for the company, grew 16% to $766.8 million, while GAAP operating income jumped 40% to $275.0 million, doubling the pace of revenue expansion. Adjusted operating income rose 18% to $415.9 million, maintaining a steady adjusted operating margin of 44.8%.
AI and R&D Subscriptions Lead Growth
Revenue from R&D and Quality subscriptions, the company's largest segment, climbed 19% to $419.4 million, while commercial subscriptions grew 13% to $347.4 million. Chief Executive Officer Peter Gassner highlighted that Vault CRM achieved its strongest quarter to date, with over 180 customers now using the system. Notably, twelve of the top 20 biopharma firms have made global commitments, and five initial customers have adopted the Falcon agent platform. Veeva Safety surpassed 100 customers, and the company added more than 30 customers to its Quality products during the quarter.
Raised Guidance Reflects Confidence
Looking ahead, Veeva raised its full-year revenue forecast to a range of $3.682 billion to $3.687 billion, up from the previous $3.635 billion to $3.645 billion. Adjusted operating income guidance increased by $30 million to approximately $1.64 billion, and adjusted earnings per share are now expected at $9.21, up from $9.05. The company also forecasts adjusted operating cash flow of about $1.6 billion, implying a margin close to 43%.
Third-Quarter Outlook and Risks
However, the company's third-quarter guidance indicates a slight slowdown, with projected revenue of $932 million to $935 million, suggesting growth of roughly 15%. Subscription revenue is anticipated to be close to $782 million. Analysts note that while the raised annual outlook is encouraging, the slower third-quarter growth and pending decisions from eight of the top 20 biopharma firms on Vault CRM commitments could pose risks. Competition, product-security concerns, or reduced funding in the drug industry may delay deployments.
Market Reaction and Valuation
Wall Street maintains an average rating of Overweight on Veeva, with a consensus price target of $251.04. The after-hours price of $265.09 was 5.6% above that target but 0.3% below the $266 median estimate. At 28.8 times the updated adjusted earnings outlook, the stock's valuation reflects expectations of sustained subscription expansion, leaving little room for error if customer migrations slow.
Investors will be closely monitoring the third-quarter performance, particularly whether R&D and Quality subscription growth can maintain its near-19% pace, which would help underpin the company's increased annual guidance. Veeva's strong cash position of $7.24 billion in cash and short-term investments provides a solid foundation for continued investment in AI-driven solutions.
