Shares of Aehr Test Systems (NASDAQ:AEHR) rallied sharply on Friday, surging 13.1% to close at $86.26 on unusually heavy volume. The move came without any new order announcements or earnings releases, leaving investors to interpret the rebound as a repricing of previously known factors.

Despite the jump, the stock remains 40.8% below its August 17 closing peak of $145.61. The recent volatility has been dramatic: after climbing from $91.71 on August 3 to a high of $145.61, shares have shed over 40% in just a few weeks. Friday's trading volume of 4.50 million shares was nearly 1.8 times the recent average, indicating strong investor interest.

Valuation Under Scrutiny

The rebound brings Aehr's market capitalization back to approximately $2.81 billion, based on 32.62 million shares outstanding. This valuation implies a price-to-sales multiple of 18.8 to 21.6 times management's fiscal 2027 revenue forecast of $130 million to $150 million, which represents projected growth of 160% to 200% over last year's $50 million.

The company also guided for non-GAAP net income of 18% to 22% of revenue, translating to $23.4 million to $33.0 million in projected income. However, these figures leave little room for execution missteps, especially given the concentration of revenue among a few key customers.

Backlog and Order Book

As of July 14, Aehr reported an effective backlog of $100.6 million, which covered 67% to 77% of the revenue guidance. A subsequent $22 million follow-on order from its lead AI-processor customer on August 12 added to the pipeline, representing 14.7% to 16.9% of the annual forecast. CEO Gayn Erickson highlighted "strong traction with AI processors" in both wafer-level and package-level testing formats.

However, backlog is not guaranteed revenue. The $100.6 million figure was reported before the $22 million order, and shipments and other bookings have likely changed since then. Investors should treat the backlog as an indicator, not a certainty.

Analyst Sentiment and Risks

Analyst targets remain optimistic, with a consensus "Strong Buy" rating and an average price target of $130, implying 50.7% upside from Friday's close. However, these targets were last updated on August 14, before the recent selloff and rebound, and are based on just five analysts—a small sample that may not fully capture market dynamics.

The bull case for Aehr centers on the growing complexity of AI chips, which require advanced packaging and testing. Aehr's systems test nine 300-millimeter wafers simultaneously, and its proprietary WaferPak contactors generate recurring demand as customers expand capacity. This scalability could drive significant growth.

Yet the risks are substantial. Aehr's five largest customers accounted for 70% of fiscal 2026 revenue, with the top three contributing 26%, 14%, and 11% respectively. A single delayed production ramp could significantly impact quarterly results. Additionally, the company's balance sheet shows $116.5 million in cash and restricted cash, but much of that came from issuing stock—Aehr raised $97.4 million net through public offerings during fiscal 2026, including an at-the-market program.

Looking Ahead

The next critical catalyst will be revenue conversion from backlog and subsequent cash generation, not just conference appearances. Friday's rally improved investor sentiment, but the execution bar remains high. As AI spending fluctuates and customer concentration persists, Aehr must prove it can deliver on its ambitious guidance to justify its premium valuation.

Investors will hear more at the Lake Street conference on September 10, where management is scheduled to present. However, until concrete financial results emerge, the market's optimism remains speculative.
