As Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) prepares for its September 9 special event, new clues from beta software suggest the next Apple Watch could be more geared toward serious athletes. However, the financial payoff remains uncertain until the company reveals pricing and availability.
The event, scheduled for 10 a.m. Pacific Time, is expected to introduce the Watch Series 12 and Watch Ultra 4, though Apple has not officially confirmed names or features. A MacRumors forum member, pdfu, has documented references in iOS 27 and watchOS 27 beta code that point to a new Readiness app, enhanced strength-training metrics, revised optical sensors, and a 128GB storage option. MacRumors reported these findings on Monday.
Investors had no immediate market reaction to parse, as U.S. markets were closed Monday for Labor Day. Apple's last trade was at $319.97 on Friday, down 2.51%, on volume of 39.6 million shares, according to StockAnalysis and Schwab. That decline occurred before the beta-code report surfaced.
What the Code Reveals
The most notable software clue is a new app called Readiness, which appeared in iOS 27 beta 5. The watch launcher places it right after the Workout app, suggesting it may offer recovery guidance. However, the code does not specify a score, algorithm, or launch date. This could be a significant addition if it helps users determine when to train or rest.
Separate health-data tables in the code include fields for sets, repetitions, weight, equipment, body side, and duration. That would bring more structure to strength workouts, a departure from simple elapsed-time tracking. Apple's public watchOS 27 preview already promises richer Workout Buddy insights and improved indoor-run measurement, but it does not mention Readiness or the new strength fields.
Hardware inferences are less certain. Files reference an optical-sensing family named Sunstone4p0, with left- and right-wrist channel maps. Lower noise parameters could lead to cleaner readings when pulse signals are weak, but code alone cannot prove clinical accuracy or guarantee the sensor ships this week.
Storage Upgrade and Hardware Pull-Through
A Samsung NAND firmware name tied to the expected T8320 chip includes “1024gb,” which maps to 128GB—double the capacity of the current Series 11 and Ultra 3, which each have 64GB. While that sounds tangible, without a new offline or on-device workload, it may not drive significant demand.
Apple does not disclose Watch sales; it groups watches with AirPods, home products, and accessories. That category generated $7.883 billion in the June quarter, up 6% from $7.404 billion a year earlier, according to Apple's latest Form 10-Q. The bucket represented 7.2% of total revenue, and nine-month category growth was only 2%.
The key question for shareholders is whether these features require new hardware. A Readiness app that runs on existing watches could improve retention across the installed base but offers less reason to upgrade. A genuinely revised sensor, or workloads that require the T8320 chip, would create a clearer case for new purchases.
Apple starts the current Series 11 at $399 and Ultra 3 at $799. Wednesday's pricing will reveal whether added storage carries a premium. Battery life remains a priority for many buyers, but the beta clues are silent on that front.
Apple's installed base reached a record across major product categories and regions, CFO Kevan Parekh said in July, though no Watch-specific figure was given. This suggests scale is available if Apple finds a compelling reason to upgrade.
What to Watch Wednesday
The strongest announcement would tie a useful health or recovery output to new sensors and models. The weaker outcome is a mostly backward-compatible watchOS release with storage that users rarely fill. Listen for model eligibility, starting prices, battery claims, and shipping dates—these will show how much of the software work can move hardware revenue this quarter. Until then, the code is a useful map, but it is not a sales forecast.
