In a year marked by crypto volatility, Bitcoin (BTC) has outperformed Strategy Inc. (NASDAQ:MSTR) by a notable margin. As of August 2, 2026, Bitcoin is down 27.9% year-to-date, while Strategy shares have fallen 38.6%. This performance gap persists even after Strategy expanded its Bitcoin holdings by 25.5% during the same period.

The divergence underscores a key shift: Strategy's leveraged approach to Bitcoin is yielding diminishing returns for shareholders. Despite the company's aggressive accumulation of the cryptocurrency, its per-share Bitcoin metric—known as BTC Yield—stood at just 4.5% as of July 26. This figure, which measures the growth of Bitcoin per diluted share, fell short of investor expectations, particularly given the substantial capital deployed.

Risk-Adjusted Comparison

When adjusted for volatility, the contrast becomes even more stark. Strategy's 30-day volatility reached 84%, nearly triple Bitcoin's 29% over the same period. This elevated risk profile has not translated into superior returns, as MSTR's stock price has been more sensitive to Bitcoin's swings. Last week, MSTR actually gained 1.8% while Bitcoin slipped 2.0%, but a 4.6% drop on Friday erased most of those gains, closing the week at $93.28.

Strategy's market valuation now sits at approximately 1.05 times its adjusted net asset value (NAV), a premium that has narrowed significantly. This suggests that investors are paying little extra for the company's corporate structure, which includes debt and preferred shares that hold senior claims in a liquidation scenario.

Funding and Balance Sheet

Strategy has been active in capital markets to fund its Bitcoin purchases. In the second quarter, the company raised $2.95 billion through common stock sales and $5.47 billion via preferred stock. By July 26, it had raised an additional $1.28 billion from common stock offerings. These moves boosted its Bitcoin holdings from 672,500 coins at the end of 2025 to 843,775 by late July.

However, the funding structure carries costs. Strategy has sold $218.4 million worth of Bitcoin this year to partially cover preferred dividend payments. The company's preferred stock, such as the Stretch preferred (NASDAQ:STRC), currently yields 13.41%, reflecting the high cost of capital. CFO Andrew Kang noted that the firm's effective cost of credit is 10.8%, a hurdle rate used to evaluate future Bitcoin acquisitions.

Financial Performance and Risks

Strategy's second-quarter results highlighted the strain. The company reported a net loss of $8.22 billion, driven primarily by an $8.32 billion unrealized loss on its Bitcoin holdings. Preferred dividends widened the loss attributable to common shareholders to $8.62 billion. This underscores the subordination of common equity to senior claims, a risk that is often overlooked when comparing MSTR to direct Bitcoin investments.

Direct Bitcoin offers simpler exposure, available 24/7, without corporate-level dilution or senior claims. While Bitcoin itself remains volatile, it does not carry the additional risks of financing execution, dilution, or a premium that may not be justified.

Market Outlook

As markets resume Monday, investors will watch key economic data: the ISM Manufacturing PMI on August 3, ISM Services PMI on August 5, and the July jobs report on August 7. These releases could influence yields and risk sentiment, potentially impacting both Bitcoin and Strategy's stock.

For now, direct Bitcoin appears more favorable for 2026. While MSTR could amplify gains if Bitcoin and capital markets rebound, the current structure offers limited premium and introduces significant volatility and subordination risk. Investors seeking pure Bitcoin exposure may find direct ownership more efficient.
