Bitcoin remained anchored near the $77,300 level on Saturday, setting the stage for a subdued open for the largest U.S. spot-Bitcoin exchange-traded fund. Should the cryptocurrency maintain its current price through Monday's market open, the iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) faces virtually no adjustment gap, according to data from Coinbase Exchange.
At 16:38 UTC on September 12, Bitcoin was trading at $77,344.85 on Coinbase's BTC-USD feed, down 0.70% from its rolling 24-hour open. The session's range spanned $76,850 to $77,948.84. On Kraken, Bitcoin was quoted at $77,348.70, a difference of less than $4 between the two major exchanges, underscoring the stability of the current price band.
Inflation Data Sparks Volatility but Fails to Break Range
The weekend calm follows a sharp two-way reaction to Friday's U.S. inflation report. According to Coinbase hourly data, Bitcoin spiked to $79,852.22 immediately after the Bureau of Labor Statistics released its August consumer price index at 8:30 a.m. ET, only to retreat to a low of $76,850. The failure to hold above the psychologically significant $80,000 level is telling: while buyers were willing to chase the initial move, they lacked the conviction to establish a new trading range above that round number.
The macro backdrop remains challenging for an asset that offers no yield. August consumer prices rose 0.4% month-over-month and 3.4% year-over-year, while core prices increased 0.3% on the month and 2.4% over 12 months. The 10-year Treasury yield ended Friday at 4.96%, keeping the opportunity cost of holding Bitcoin elevated.
Fed Meeting Looms as Next Catalyst
The next significant test comes quickly: the Federal Open Market Committee is scheduled to meet September 15-16, with a policy statement and updated economic projections due Wednesday. Bitcoin's post-CPI low of $76,850 provides initial evidence that buyers can defend the current range, but the 72-hour low of $76,030 represents a stronger support line. A break below that level would suggest Friday's rebound merely delayed a repricing to higher real-rate risk.
IBIT's Implied Gap Nearly Zero
The iShares Bitcoin Trust closed Friday with a net asset value of $43.71 per share, a market close of $43.77, and a Bitcoin benchmark level of $77,209.21. At Saturday's Coinbase quote, a simple one-for-one mapping of Bitcoin's price to IBIT's NAV places the indicative NAV near $43.79, just 0.04% above the fund's closing share price.
The table below illustrates how Bitcoin price moves would translate to IBIT's estimated NAV, based on the September 11 NAV of $43.71 and Bitcoin benchmark of $77,209.21:
- Bitcoin at $76,030: -1.53% vs. benchmark, estimated NAV $43.04
- Bitcoin at $76,850: -0.47% vs. benchmark, estimated NAV $43.51
- Bitcoin at $77,344.85: +0.18% vs. benchmark, estimated NAV $43.79
- Bitcoin at $80,000: +3.61% vs. benchmark, estimated NAV $45.29
It's important to note that this is a translation tool, not a Monday price forecast. Bitcoin trades continuously, while IBIT does not trade on weekends. The relevant input will be Bitcoin's price when Nasdaq opens at 9:30 a.m. ET, and market makers can price the shares above or below contemporaneous NAV. Friday's premium was already small at 0.13%.
The scale of that bridge is material. BlackRock reported $60.62 billion of IBIT net assets and 47.7 million shares traded Friday. That volume was below the 59.4 million 30-day average, but still deep enough that a modest weekend move should normally be absorbed without investors mistaking the opening gap for a separate fund catalyst.
Consolidation or Breakout?
The strongest bullish counterargument is equally concrete: Bitcoin absorbed a hotter monthly inflation print and still sits above both its post-release low and Friday's IBIT benchmark. A sustained recovery through $80,000 would put the simple IBIT estimate near $45.29, about 3.5% above Friday's market close. Until then, the weekend message is consolidation rather than a breakout.
Investors using Coinbase, Strategy, or Bitcoin miners as proxies should not apply the table mechanically. Coinbase also depends on trading volume, while Strategy adds corporate leverage and miners add power costs, equipment economics, and financing risk. For the cleanest Monday read, Bitcoin's price, IBIT's opening premium or discount, and the 10-year yield need to point in the same direction.
