C3.ai founder and CEO Thomas Siebel has made a significant personal investment of approximately $69 million in the company, purchasing 6.17 million Class A shares at $11.16 each. The move comes as the enterprise artificial intelligence firm attempts to reverse a sharp revenue decline and stabilize its operations following a turbulent period marked by layoffs and executive changes.
Financial Performance and Restructuring
C3.ai reported a fiscal fourth-quarter revenue drop to $51.6 million, down from $108.7 million in the same period last year. The company's net loss widened to $115.6 million, or 79 cents per share. For the full fiscal year, revenue fell to $250.3 million from $389.1 million in fiscal 2025. The company has been undergoing restructuring, including a 26% workforce reduction earlier this year, as it seeks to cut costs and refocus its sales strategy.
Shell Contract Expansion
Amid the challenges, C3.ai announced an expansion of its long-standing partnership with Shell. The energy giant has used C3.ai's predictive maintenance software since 2018 and will now extend the agreement to cover over 13,000 machines globally. The expanded deal incorporates agentic AI, which can autonomously identify equipment issues and suggest fixes. C3.ai president Stephen Ehikian stated that the Shell project demonstrates enterprise AI's ability to deliver hundreds of millions of dollars in economic value at scale.
Outlook and Analyst Reactions
C3.ai guided fiscal 2027 revenue in the range of $210 million to $240 million, with a projected non-GAAP operating loss of $128 million to $160 million. CEO Siebel described recent sales performance as "entirely unacceptable" and emphasized the company's commitment to fixing the issues. Analysts remain divided on the stock's prospects. UBS raised its price target to $12 from $9, maintaining a Neutral rating, while warning of a potentially "noisy" year ahead. Wedbush's Dan Ives kept an Outperform rating and $15 target, suggesting the restructuring is largely behind the company. In contrast, DA Davidson's Lucky Schreiner maintained an Underperform rating and $7 target, viewing Siebel's stock purchase as an effort to signal confidence.
Competitive Landscape
C3.ai faces intense competition from larger players. Microsoft is involved in the Shell rollout through its Azure cloud platform, while Palantir has a market capitalization near $364 billion, reflecting investor enthusiasm for enterprise AI. C3.ai's market cap stands at approximately $1.5 billion, with shares trading around $10.58, down 1.3% in pre-market activity.
Risks and Challenges
The company acknowledges several risks, including ongoing losses, customer concentration, long sales cycles, and the need to retain key executives. The immediate priority is to halt the revenue decline and prove that its restructured salesforce can generate new business. C3.ai's shares remain well below their peaks during earlier AI rallies, underscoring the challenges ahead.
