Coeur Mining (NYSE: CDE) experienced a sharp decline in its stock price on Thursday, with shares dropping 8.8% to $15.90 in early trading. The sell-off came as the company's revised guidance for its Canadian operations tempered investor enthusiasm over an otherwise robust second-quarter performance that included record cash flow.

The market reaction was driven primarily by a downward revision to the company's 2026 production outlook, particularly affecting its New Afton and Rainy River mines in Canada. These assets, acquired in March, have seen underground development progress at a slower pace than originally anticipated, prompting the company to adjust its forecasts. The midpoint for total gold output was lowered by 7.7%, while capital expenditure guidance was raised by 16.8%.

Financial Highlights and Per-Share Concerns

Despite the operational headwinds, Coeur reported a 45% increase in free cash flow for the quarter, reaching $387.5 million compared to $266.8 million in the first quarter. Revenue also surged 26.8% to $1.09 billion. However, a significant jump in the weighted-average share count—up 48% following the March acquisition—diluted per-share metrics. Free cash flow per weighted share declined by approximately 1.9% to $0.375, underscoring the impact of the share issuance on shareholder returns.

The company posted adjusted earnings of 12 cents per share, falling short of the consensus estimate of 26 cents. Revenue also missed expectations, with analysts forecasting $1.24 billion. The shortfall was partly attributed to a $140 million non-cash purchase-accounting expense, which Coeur calculated as a 10-cent per-share impact. Excluding this item, adjusted EPS would have been 22 cents, still 15% below consensus.

Production and Pricing Dynamics

Gold production reached an all-time high of 163,490 ounces, a 69% increase quarter-over-quarter, while silver output remained steady at 4.4 million ounces. However, realized prices for both metals declined, with gold down 6% and silver down 14% compared to the previous quarter, partially offsetting the volume gains.

Guidance Revisions and Cost Pressures

The revised guidance for 2026 reflects a mixed picture. While total gold output was trimmed to a range of 630,000 to 750,000 ounces (from 680,000 to 815,000), silver guidance remained unchanged. Copper output was also reduced by 21.7% at the midpoint. Cash costs for New Afton gold were raised by 31.8%, and copper costs surged 68.6%. Rainy River's gold cash costs were lifted by 26.7%.

Part of the cost escalation is due to accounting adjustments, including $244 million related to purchase price allocation and streaming agreements at Rainy River, and $20 million at New Afton. These non-operational factors contributed to the higher cost outlook.

Management Outlook and Market Reaction

Chief Executive Mitchell J. Krebs remains optimistic, projecting "sharp increases in production levels and free cash flow" in the second half of the year. The company anticipates adjusted EBITDA of approximately $2.3 billion and free cash flow of $1.5 billion for 2026, with year-end cash nearing $2 billion. Based on Thursday's market capitalization of $16.34 billion, this implies a forward yield of about 9.2%, though this estimate is preliminary and depends heavily on metal prices and operational execution.

Despite the company-specific weakness, gold prices climbed 0.4% to a seven-week high, and mining peers such as Hecla Mining (NYSE: HL), Pan American Silver (NYSE: PAAS), and the VanEck Gold Miners ETF (NYSEARCA: GDX) all outperformed Coeur, with losses limited to 3.3% or less.

Buyback and Analyst Sentiment

Coeur has initiated share repurchases to counter dilution, buying back 6.7 million shares for $121 million by July 31, representing about 1.7% of the shares issued in March. However, shares outstanding still rose by 60% between December and June. Wall Street analysts remain largely bullish, with a consensus rating of "Buy" and a median price target of $24.00, though these may be revised following the guidance update.

Key risks include underground execution challenges, contractor reliability, and volatility in metal prices. Increased capital requirements may also limit future buyback capacity. The company aims to achieve a daily throughput of 16,000 tonnes at New Afton by early Q4, and 5,000 tonnes at Rainy River by year-end, up from 3,300 in July. These milestones will be critical in determining whether record cash flow can translate into meaningful per-share growth.
