Shares of Fangdd Network Group Ltd. (NASDAQ: DUO) experienced a dramatic surge on Friday, climbing 51.9% to $1.06 by 14:58 EDT. The rally came after the Chinese property-technology company reported a narrowed loss for the first half of the year, driven primarily by aggressive cost-cutting measures rather than top-line growth.
The company's revenue declined by 43.1% year-over-year to RMB115.7 million ($17.1 million), reflecting the ongoing downturn in China's property sector. Closed-loop gross merchandise value (GMV) also fell sharply, dropping 30.8% to RMB5.5 billion. Fangdd attributed these declines to subdued property demand and its strategic withdrawal from higher-risk developer projects.
Despite the revenue slide, the company managed to improve its gross margin to 13.2%, up from 9.1% in the prior-year period. The expansion of 410 basis points was partly fueled by higher-margin asset-management services, which helped offset the reduced transaction base.
A significant reduction in operating expenses was the key driver of the improved bottom line. Operating expenses plummeted by 54.3% to RMB41.2 million, with general and administrative expenses cut by roughly two-thirds. This was supported by decreased impairment charges and additional cost-saving initiatives. Consequently, the operating loss narrowed to RMB25.9 million from RMB71.8 million, and the net loss was reduced by 12.0% to RMB34.5 million.
Liquidity remains a pressing concern. Cash, restricted cash, and short-term investments totaled RMB107.2 million, down from RMB147.5 million at the end of the previous year. Operating cash consumption for the half was RMB36.7 million, meaning the liquidity pool covers only about 2.9 times the six-month cash burn rate.
The sharp rise in Fangdd's stock price on Friday added approximately $14.0 million to its market capitalization, bringing the implied equity value to about $40.9 million based on 38.55 million weighted-average shares. This valuation represents roughly 2.4 times first-half revenue, or about 1.2 times on an annualized basis before adjusting for cash and liabilities.
However, the company faces significant dilution risk. The weighted-average share count surged from just 3.01 million in the prior year to 38.55 million, indicating substantial share issuance. Additionally, Fangdd received a Nasdaq minimum-bid price notice in July, requiring the company to maintain compliance with listing standards.
Chairman Xi Zeng acknowledged that stabilization in the national property sector "still take some time." Management is looking to expand the application of artificial intelligence but did not provide specific quantitative projections. The market's positive reaction underscores investor optimism about cost discipline, but sustained growth will depend on stabilizing transaction volumes, achieving positive cash flow, and proving that margin improvements are durable amid China's property slowdown.
