U.S. stock markets opened on Monday under the shadow of a power grid emergency that is putting AI-driven energy trading systems to the test, while shares of key equipment providers declined sharply. An equal-weight basket of four leading grid and data-center infrastructure companies dropped 4.1% by late morning, underperforming the broader market. The SPDR S&P 500 ETF (SPY) edged down 0.3%.
Federal Emergency Measures
The U.S. Department of Energy granted the Southwest Power Pool (SPP) emergency authority to deploy additional power generation across its 17-state region through August 3. The order allows SPP to operate designated plants during reliability concerns and use backup generators ahead of or during a level-three emergency. The Department noted that over 35 gigawatts of unused backup generation exist nationwide, though that capacity is not all available within SPP's footprint.
Friday's western emergency warning concluded without controlled outages, but a less severe advisory remains in effect for the West until August 1. The East continues under a resource advisory through July 30.
Market Reaction
The equipment providers' shares fell sharply despite the federal measures. GE Vernova (GEV) dropped 5.2%, Eaton (ETN) fell 3.8%, Quanta Services (PWR) slipped 2.9%, and Vertiv Holdings (VRT) decreased 4.7%. The group trades at an average trailing P/E of approximately 54.6 times earnings, reflecting high valuations that may already price in future orders. The gap between their performance and the broader market serves as a cautionary signal for investors.
The four-stock group underperformed SPY by 3.9 percentage points and lagged the utilities sector ETF (XLU) by 3.3 points. The crisis did not protect high-multiple suppliers, indicating that immediate grid needs do not guarantee further share gains.
Grid Strain and Data Center Demand
The strain on the grid extends beyond SPP. PJM Interconnection recorded a provisional peak of 168,158 megawatts on July 2, surpassing its 2006 all-time high by 1.6%. During that heatwave, forced generation outages ranged from 18,100 to 19,400 megawatts, an increase of 41% to 52% compared to typical peak-day averages. Average temperatures across PJM's territory reached 97 degrees Fahrenheit, with some areas in the low 100s.
Data centers are reshaping electricity demand. According to the Energy Information Administration, servers are projected to account for 7% of commercial electricity consumption in 2025. Their steady, round-the-clock demand reduces the respite grids typically get during nighttime hours. PJM now projects summer peak demand will rise 3.6% annually over the next decade, compared to just 0.3% in its 2021 estimate, with an anticipated increase of nearly 66 gigawatts by 2036.
Equipment Bottlenecks
Equipment availability is emerging as a critical bottleneck. Ben Boucher, senior analyst at Wood Mackenzie, noted that lead times for generator step-up transformers exceeded 160 weeks by early 2026, while high-voltage breaker lead times rose to 125 weeks, up from 77 weeks in 2023. Wood Mackenzie estimates that data centers could account for up to 40% of the electrical-equipment market in an accelerated scenario, compared to less than 2% in 2020.
While the shortage benefits suppliers that can deliver efficiently, Monday's market action suggests that upcoming orders are already priced in at high valuations. Risks include a drop in temperatures, a rebound in imports, increased wind generation, project delays, expanded manufacturing output, or weaker data center demand, all of which could weigh on equipment prices and valuation multiples.
The next key checkpoints are SPP's East advisory ending July 30, the West advisory concluding August 1, and the DOE's emergency authority expiring on August 3.
