Intel Corporation (NASDAQ: INTC) delivered a standout quarterly performance on Thursday, surpassing Wall Street's top and bottom-line expectations as its artificial intelligence server business generated significant operating leverage. The chipmaker's shares advanced by 5% in extended trading following the announcement.

Key Financial Highlights

For the second quarter of 2026, Intel reported revenue of $16.13 billion, exceeding the LSEG consensus estimate of $14.42 billion by 11.8%. Adjusted earnings per share came in at $0.42, double the $0.21 analysts had predicted. Adjusted gross margin reached 41.8%, 3 percentage points above the forecast of 38.8%.

The company also provided an upbeat outlook for the third quarter. Intel guided for revenue around $16.30 billion at the midpoint, 7.9% above the $15.10 billion consensus, and adjusted EPS of $0.38, surpassing estimates by 40.7%.

Data Center and AI Drives Profitability

Revenue from Intel's Data Center and AI segment surged 59% year-over-year to $6.26 billion. Operating profit for the unit skyrocketed to $2.47 billion from $633 million in the prior-year period, with segment margins expanding to 39.5% from 16.1%. The incremental operating margin on each additional dollar of sales was approximately 79%, a metric that investors viewed as the quarter's most telling indicator of financial health.

Despite these gains, Intel's foundry business continued to weigh on overall profitability. Foundry revenue increased 31% to $5.77 billion, but the unit reported an operating loss of $2.09 billion, narrowing from a loss of $3.17 billion a year earlier. The foundry's loss still consumed 84% of the data-center division's operating profit. Foundry margins improved to negative 36.2% from negative 71.7%.

Management Commentary and Outlook

Chief Financial Officer David Zinsner told Reuters that the robust demand environment justified increased investment. Intel raised its 2026 capital expenditure forecast to $20 billion from $18 billion, with Zinsner noting that outlays are expected to rise "up meaningfully" in the coming year. He added, "That's signaling the confidence around the growth opportunities for the business."

Intel has secured multi-year CPU and XPU contracts spanning three to five years, with some agreements specifying both pricing and volume commitments. Customers retain the flexibility to revise terms if market conditions change.

Client Business and Cash Flow

Intel's client computing group also posted gains, though at a more modest pace. Revenue increased 13% to $8.88 billion, with operating profit of $2.34 billion and a margin of 26.4%.

Cash flow presented a mixed picture. Operating cash flow totaled $7.0 billion, but adjusted free cash flow was negative $8.4 billion, largely due to a $12.2 billion net outflow related to partner investments.

Market Context and Risks

The earnings release came after a steep sector pullback. Intel shares had declined 27% in July leading up to the report, while the broader semiconductor index dropped 13% and briefly entered bear market territory last week. Friday's regular trading session will test the sustainability of the after-hours rally.

Chief Executive Lip-Bu Tan described the results as Intel's "strongest revenue growth in more than fifteen years." However, significant risks persist. Foundry operations remain deeply unprofitable, adjusted free cash flow is negative, and capital expenditures are rising. Meanwhile, Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA) is entering the CPU market with its Vera chip, and leading cloud providers continue to develop their own internal processors, intensifying competitive pressure.
