Marvell Technology (NASDAQ: MRVL) saw its shares advance 5.1% to $240.91 during Tuesday afternoon trading, adding roughly $10.2 billion to its market capitalization. The rally followed a wave of analyst price target hikes, reflecting growing optimism around the chipmaker's AI-driven growth prospects ahead of its fiscal second-quarter earnings release on Thursday.
Susquehanna analyst Christopher Rolland increased his price target to $265 from $230, maintaining a Positive rating and citing strength in AI networking. Rosenblatt's Sajal Dogra was even more bullish, lifting his target to $300 from $240 while keeping a Buy rating. The new targets represent potential upside of 10% and 24.5%, respectively, from Tuesday's price.
The elevated expectations come with heightened risk. Options markets are pricing in a 10.6% swing in Marvell's share price following the earnings report, a move that could occur in either direction. This implied volatility underscores the uncertainty surrounding the company's near-term performance, even as Wall Street remains largely optimistic.
Marvell has guided for fiscal second-quarter revenue of $2.70 billion, with a possible variance of 5% either way. The midpoint implies a 35% year-over-year increase, driven by robust demand for AI-related networking products. The company also expects adjusted earnings of $0.93 per share, with a variance of five cents.
The company's first-quarter results set a high bar, with record revenue of $2.418 billion, up 28% year over year. Adjusted gross margin stood at 58.9%, and operating cash flow reached $638.8 million. These figures provide a baseline for Thursday's assessment, and any deviation could trigger significant market movement.
CEO Matt Murphy highlighted "exceptional AI-related bookings" in May, attributing the strong outlook to 800G and 1.6T optical products, Ethernet switches, and custom accelerator initiatives. However, profit margins remain a key focus. Marvell projects an adjusted gross margin of 58.25% to 59.25% for the quarter, with the potential for robust custom silicon growth to boost sales but weigh on overall product mix.
Wall Street's consensus remains bullish, with a Strong Buy rating and an average price target of $267.82, implying 11.2% upside. Analysts project fiscal 2027 revenue of $11.56 billion, a 41% increase, and adjusted earnings of $4.06 per share. At $240.91, the stock trades at nearly 59 times that earnings forecast, reflecting high growth expectations.
However, risks are evident. Customer concentration, potential delays in AI rollouts, and a less favorable product mix could limit revenue and margins. Marvell also cites supply constraints and deferred customer orders as significant uncertainties. The company's valuation leaves little room for error, especially with Rosenblatt's $300 target implying an equity value of roughly $263 billion, nearly $52 billion above Tuesday's market cap.
Investors will get clarity when Marvell reports earnings after the market close on Thursday, followed by a conference call at 4:45 p.m. EDT. The options market's expectation of a double-digit move suggests that the report could be a pivotal moment for the stock, with both upside and downside risks in play.
