Meta Platforms (META) announced on Monday that it has established a new enterprise artificial intelligence division and appointed Chirantan “CJ” Desai, formerly the chief executive officer of MongoDB (MDB), to lead the initiative. Desai will report directly to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg as chief enterprise platform officer.

MongoDB simultaneously confirmed that Desai had resigned effective immediately, with the company’s former CEO Dev Ittycheria stepping in as interim chief executive. The news sent MongoDB shares tumbling approximately 18% in morning trading, reflecting investor concerns about the abrupt leadership change and its implications for the company’s strategic direction.

The move marks a significant step for Meta as it seeks to commercialize its artificial intelligence capabilities for business customers. The newly formed unit, dubbed “Enterprise Platform,” is positioned as Meta’s next major business pillar, with an initial portfolio that includes the Muse agent, Meta Business Agent, Muse API, and Muse Code. However, the announcement lacked specific details on pricing, launch timelines, or customer commitments, leaving many questions unanswered about the commercial viability of the venture.

Desai’s appointment brings a wealth of enterprise software experience to Meta. Prior to his brief tenure at MongoDB, which began in November 2025, Desai served as president and chief operating officer at ServiceNow and led product and engineering at Cloudflare. His background in selling complex software to large organizations aligns with Meta’s ambition to expand beyond its core advertising business.

For MongoDB, the sudden departure of its CEO less than a year into his tenure creates near-term uncertainty. Ittycheria, who led the company from 2014 to 2025 and oversaw its growth from roughly $35 million to over $2.3 billion in annual revenue, returns to steady the ship. MongoDB has reaffirmed its guidance for the current quarter and full year, projecting fiscal third-quarter revenue of $756 million to $761 million and full-year revenue of $2.99 billion to $3.03 billion.

Investors will be closely watching MongoDB’s upcoming Investor Day, scheduled for September 29, where management is expected to provide clarity on the CEO search and any potential adjustments to long-term targets. The company’s second-quarter results showed strong momentum, with revenue up 30% year-over-year and Atlas revenue growing 29%, but the leadership void could test customer and investor confidence.

Meta’s enterprise AI push is part of a broader trend among tech giants to monetize generative AI technologies. Zuckerberg had previously hinted at opportunities in business agents and APIs during an investor call in July. The creation of a dedicated unit with direct CEO oversight signals a strategic commitment, but the lack of commercial details suggests the initiative is still in its early stages.

Both companies now face distinct execution challenges. Meta must prove it can sell and support enterprise-grade software, while MongoDB must navigate a leadership transition without disrupting its growth trajectory. The coming months will be critical for both as they seek to reassure stakeholders and deliver on their respective promises.
