Mitsubishi Motors Rally on Pajero Comeback Plans

Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (TYO:7211) saw its shares climb 2.5% on Wednesday, closing at ¥374.70, as the market gears up for the global unveiling of the redesigned 2027 Pajero scheduled for September 2. The stock's rise added approximately ¥12.3 billion to the company's market capitalization, based on the ¥9.20 per-share gain multiplied by 1.34 billion outstanding shares.

The renewed interest underscores the strategic importance of the Pajero for Mitsubishi's growth ambitions. The company is targeting retail sales of 857,000 vehicles in fiscal 2026, an 8% increase from the previous year's 797,000 units. Additionally, Mitsubishi expects operating profit to rise 19% to ¥90 billion, up from ¥75.5 billion a year earlier, with an operating margin of 2.8% compared to 2.6% previously.

The Pajero, a flagship SUV with a legacy of over 3.25 million units sold across more than 170 markets, is returning after a five-year hiatus. Its comeback is a cornerstone of Mitsubishi's strategy to boost sales volume and enhance its product mix. The refreshened teaser website, updated on August 24, confirms the September 2 launch date and highlights a ladder-frame chassis and Super-All Wheel Control system, along with the model's signature triple multi-meter interior.

The new Pajero will share its underpinnings with the Triton pickup, but Mitsubishi has engineered distinct cabin and suspension setups to optimize off-road capability and on-road comfort. This differentiation is crucial as the company seeks to appeal to both adventure-seeking consumers and those prioritizing daily drivability.

Analysts remain cautious, however. Of 12 analysts polled, only two rate the stock a buy, seven recommend holding, and three suggest selling. The average price target stands at ¥372.83, slightly below Wednesday's closing price, indicating limited upside expectations. Key uncertainties include undisclosed pricing, launch regions, and powertrain options, which could significantly impact the vehicle's market reception and the company's margin targets.

Financially, Mitsubishi's margin outlook leaves little room for error. Every 10-basis-point shift in operating margin corresponds to approximately ¥3.26 billion, equivalent to 3.6% of the annual operating profit goal. Management's projections factor in ¥59.8 billion from volume and mix improvements and ¥30.8 billion from pricing, which are expected to offset ¥28.7 billion in procurement and shipping cost pressures.

The stock's Wednesday performance saw it close at its session high after opening at ¥364.20, with a low of ¥362.00. Despite the rally, the shares remain 18.2% below their 52-week peak of ¥458. Trading volume was robust, with 8.57 million shares changing hands on August 26.

Investors will be closely monitoring the September 2 premiere for detailed regional launch schedules and pricing information. These disclosures will be pivotal in assessing the Pajero's potential contribution to Mitsubishi's 857,000-unit sales target and its ability to sustain the company's margin trajectory amid a competitive SUV market.
