Monolithic Power Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ:MPWR) saw its shares surge more than 10% in after-hours trading Thursday following the release of better-than-expected second-quarter results and an optimistic third-quarter forecast. The stock was quoted at $1,450 as of 6:58 p.m. EDT, a 10.2% increase from Thursday's closing price of $1,316.18.

Strong Q2 Performance

For the second quarter, the company reported revenue of $980.6 million, a 47.6% increase year-over-year, surpassing both its own guidance midpoint of $900 million and the analyst consensus of $903.3 million. Adjusted earnings per share came in at $6.50, beating the $5.88 consensus estimate by 10.5%. All six of the company's end markets posted sequential growth during the quarter.

Q3 Guidance Exceeds Expectations

Looking ahead, Monolithic Power projected third-quarter revenue in the range of $1.14 billion to $1.16 billion. The midpoint of $1.15 billion represents 17.3% sequential growth and is 16.5% higher than the consensus analyst estimate compiled before the report. Adjusted gross margin is expected to remain stable at 55.7%, while adjusted operating margin is forecast to improve to 38.0%.

AI and Data Center Demand Drive Growth

The growth composition was particularly noteworthy: Enterprise Data and Communications contributed $294.3 million of the $316.0 million year-over-year revenue increase, accounting for 93.1% of total growth despite representing only 52.2% of total revenue. Enterprise Data revenue surged 164.3% to $380.6 million, driven by demand for AI and server power solutions. Communications revenue rose 78.3%, supported by growth in optical modules and switches.

CEO Michael Hsing attributed the results to "the strength of our diversified model" and highlighted the company's move toward full-service power solutions. The company has begun sampling high-voltage AC-to-DC solutions for 800-volt data-center infrastructure and has expanded its planned capacity to substantially exceed $6 billion.

Profitability and Financial Position

Profitability improved alongside revenue growth. Adjusted gross margin remained close to 55.6%, while adjusted operating margin climbed to 37.5%, a 2.7 percentage point increase year-over-year. Inventory increased 9.1% from the prior quarter to $675.8 million, but inventory days declined by 17 to 140, indicating efficient inventory management. Cash and investments stood at $1.41 billion.

The board authorized a $500 million increase to the share repurchase program, bringing the total authorization to $1 billion, which represents approximately 1.5% of the company's market capitalization.

Market Context and Valuation

The after-hours rally pushed the trailing price-to-earnings ratio to nearly 104 times, significantly higher than analog-chip peers Analog Devices (NASDAQ:ADI) at 54.5 times and Texas Instruments (NASDAQ:TXN) at 42.4 times. The stock had risen 1.7% last week before dropping 1.3% by Thursday's close. After-hours trading indicated shares were 8.7% higher compared to last Friday's close.

While the strong guidance and AI-driven growth are positive catalysts, risks remain elevated. With just two segments responsible for the majority of incremental growth, estimates could be affected by softer AI investment, optical demand fluctuations, export restrictions, or supply limitations. The elevated valuation leaves limited tolerance for any disappointments. Friday's regular trading session will provide further insight into how the market digests the after-hours reaction.
