NEAR Protocol's native token has staged a remarkable rally, climbing 82% in just one week, as the market reacts to a significant milestone in its privacy-focused liquidity program. The token reached $4.17 on Sunday, up 17.25% in the last 24 hours, according to Binance data. This surge stands in stark contrast to the broader crypto market, where Bitcoin and Ether both slipped slightly during the same period.
The catalyst for this move was the announcement on September 17 that NEAR's Confidential Intents deposits had surpassed $70 million. This achievement triggered the first reward snapshot, distributing 333,333 milestone tokens to eligible participants. The program is designed to incentivize liquidity provision in a private trading environment, which NEAR claims reduces front-running and order exposure.
NEAR's trading volume on Binance reached $319.21 million, which is notably 33.8% of Bitcoin's volume on the same exchange, despite NEAR's much smaller market cap. This concentration suggests that demand is specific to NEAR rather than part of a broader market rally.
The reward pool is worth approximately $1.39 million at current prices, which is just under 2% of the reported $70 million in deposits. While this is a modest incentive, the structure of the program—where rewards are locked until NEAR's three-day volume-weighted average price (VWAP) reaches $3.33—creates a speculative hook. With the spot price already 25% above that threshold, investors are watching to see if the VWAP condition is met.
However, the sustainability of this rally is uncertain. Analysts' forecasts, even those published as recently as September 20, were quickly overtaken by the price surge. For example, CoinMarketCap's AI model suggested a retest of $3.88, a level that was already exceeded. Similarly, a bullish case from Phemex, published in early September, was surpassed by 74.6%.
The key question is whether the privacy incentive can retain deposits after the rewards are claimed. NEAR has not yet confirmed a date for measuring retention, and the risk of a post-incentive exodus is real. The protocol's revenue, which now funds token buybacks, will need to show meaningful growth to justify the current valuation.
NEAR's broader Intents system has connected over 30 blockchains and facilitated more than $30 billion in cumulative cross-chain volume, according to the project. This provides a strong foundation, but the confidential liquidity segment is still in its early stages.
As the market digests this rapid move, the focus will be on whether NEAR can maintain its momentum and convert short-term speculation into long-term usage. The next few weeks will be critical in determining if the privacy incentive is a sustainable growth driver or just a temporary boost.
