Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer Nio has reported robust delivery figures for March and the first quarter of 2026, exceeding its own guidance and demonstrating significant year-on-year growth. The company delivered 35,486 vehicles in March, representing a substantial 136% increase compared to the same month last year.

First-Quarter Performance Exceeds Expectations

For the entire first quarter, Nio's cumulative deliveries reached 83,465 units. This figure came in just above the company's provided guidance range of 80,000 to 83,000 vehicles, indicating stronger-than-anticipated demand. The company's total lifetime deliveries now stand at 1,081,057 vehicles.

Brand Breakdown and Model Performance

The March deliveries were split across Nio's brand portfolio. The flagship Nio brand contributed 22,490 units, while the Onvo sub-brand accounted for 6,877 deliveries. The newer Firefly brand recorded 6,119 deliveries for the month. Notably, the all-new ES8 model reportedly achieved 16,255 deliveries in March and has maintained the top position in China's large SUV segment for three consecutive months.

The Firefly brand demonstrated particular strength, with its March sales volume doubling from February and marking its second-best monthly performance to date. The brand surpassed the milestone of 50,000 cumulative deliveries on March 28. In a significant move for international growth, Firefly recently launched a right-hand-drive model in Thailand, priced at 799,000 baht.

Competitive Landscape and Upcoming Launches

Within the competitive Chinese EV market, Nio's March total placed it behind rivals Li Auto, which reported 41,053 deliveries, and Leapmotor, with 50,029 units. However, Nio's performance edged out Xpeng, which recorded 27,415 deliveries for the month.

The company is preparing for a busy product launch schedule in the coming weeks. On April 2, refreshed versions of the ES6, EC6, ET5, and ET5 Touring models are scheduled for release. A technology event focused on the ES9 is planned for April 9, followed by the market launch of the Onvo L80 large SUV in May.

Strategic Focus and Challenges

Nio is positioning the Firefly brand as a key driver for its global expansion strategy. Company founder William Li has previously described Firefly as "our pioneering brand for global market entry." At the recent Bangkok motor show, Firefly brand chief Daniel Jin stated the marque is targeting launches in 20 to 30 countries throughout 2026.

However, maintaining momentum presents challenges. Firefly accounted for less than 20% of the group's total March deliveries. Its first-quarter total of 11,583 units falls short of the pace needed to achieve a previously mentioned target of 100,000 vehicles by year-end. Jin has identified brand awareness as the brand's "biggest roadblock." The external market environment remains challenging, with industry leader BYD reporting a seventh consecutive monthly sales decline in March amid intense price competition in China's EV sector.

Financial Context and Future Outlook

These delivery figures follow Nio's announcement in March of its first quarterly adjusted operating profit, which reached 1.25 billion yuan for the fourth quarter of 2025. The company attributed this profitability to cost reductions, higher delivery volumes, and an improved sales mix. The latest delivery data appears to reinforce this positive operational trend.

Investor sentiment seemed positive ahead of the delivery report, with Nio's Hong Kong-listed shares rising approximately 10% earlier on the day of the announcement. The company's future growth trajectory is now closely tied to the market reception of its upcoming model launches and the success of its international expansion efforts, particularly through the Firefly brand.
