Investors delivered a harsh verdict on onsemi's (ON) long-term strategic roadmap unveiled during its 2026 Investor Day. While management presented a detailed blueprint targeting substantial profitability improvements by 2030, the market responded with a sharp selloff, sending shares down 9.02% to close at $66.60 on September 16.

Ambitious Targets, Skeptical Market

The company's plan calls for non-GAAP gross margin to climb from an estimated 40% in 2026 to 53% by 2030. Additionally, onsemi aims to generate approximately $3.5 billion in annual free cash flow, representing a 30% to 35% margin, while AI data-center revenue is projected to surpass $2.5 billion. These targets are set within a self-defined addressable market of $213 billion spanning automotive, industrial, and data-center sectors.

However, the market's immediate reaction suggests that the gap between current performance and these future goals remains a critical concern. The 9% decline indicates that investors are seeking a more tangible bridge between today's earnings and the 2030 projections.

Current Financial Baseline

onsemi's second-quarter results provide a reference point. Revenue reached $1.604 billion, with non-GAAP gross margin at 39.3% and free cash flow of $425.4 million. Annualizing that quarter yields a cash-flow pace of approximately $1.70 billion, meaning the 2030 target is more than double current levels. This stark comparison underscores the scale of the challenge.

At the closing price of $66.60, onsemi's equity value stands at roughly $26.0 billion based on 390.3 million basic weighted-average shares. If the company achieves $3.5 billion in free cash flow without significant dilution, that would represent about 13.5% of today's equity value—a substantial potential return, but one heavily dependent on flawless execution.

Margin Expansion: The Core Risk

The gross margin trajectory is particularly challenging. Moving from 39.3% to 53% requires a 13.7 percentage-point improvement. Management attributes 6.5 points to improved factory utilization, which rose to approximately 83% at the end of Q2 from 68% at end-2025, and another 2.25 points to its "Fab Right" manufacturing initiatives. The remainder must come from pricing power and a richer product mix.

This reliance on utilization makes the targets sensitive to cyclical demand. While higher utilization can quickly boost margins when automotive and industrial orders strengthen, the same fixed-cost absorption works in reverse during downturns. onsemi's streamlined factory network could provide similar capacity at 17% lower cost when fully utilized, but filling that capacity requires sustained end-market demand.

AI Momentum and Product Innovation

The bullish case has some supporting evidence. Second-quarter revenue grew 9% year-over-year, free cash flow quadrupled, and gross margin improved by 1.7 points. AI data centers represented the fastest-growing segment, with management expecting revenue to more than double in 2026, double again in 2027, and grow about 50% annually through 2030.

The new Embedded Power Platform, which integrates the silicon wafer into the package, promises three to five times the power density of current solutions. Early testing of a solid-state circuit-breaker design showed a 50% smaller footprint and 20% cooler operation. Subaru will receive samples for evaluation in future electrified vehicles.

However, these are engineering claims and evaluation programs, not booked production revenue. A customer trial can validate performance, but it doesn't establish volume, pricing, or the share of system value onsemi can capture. The $213 billion addressable market similarly describes potential, not secured sales.

Key Checkpoints Ahead

The investment thesis now hinges on three measurable milestones: gross margin improvement driven by utilization without relying on an unusually strong demand cycle; AI data-center sales achieving the projected consecutive annual doublings; and free cash flow keeping pace as new platforms transition from evaluation to production. The September 16 close suggests investors are pricing in a steep discount to this execution path, even as the latest quarter demonstrates that the recovery has begun.
