Palo Alto Networks (NASDAQ: PANW) closed Friday at $363.86, marking a 9.65% weekly gain, as investors shifted focus to the company's organic growth trajectory rather than headline acquisition-driven numbers. The stock's advance came despite the announcement that China's Cyberspace Administration has initiated a cybersecurity review of Palo Alto products available in the country.

China Review Adds Uncertainty

The Chinese regulator said the investigation pertains to national security and critical infrastructure but did not specify which products are under scrutiny, potential vulnerabilities, or possible sanctions. This lack of detail makes it difficult to quantify the financial exposure, especially since Palo Alto does not break out revenue from China separately, instead grouping it within its Asia-Pacific and Japan segment.

Organic Growth in Focus

Analysts are increasingly emphasizing the importance of distinguishing between consolidation effects from recent acquisitions, such as CyberArk and Chronosphere, and genuine underlying momentum. For the fiscal third quarter, total revenue rose 31% year-over-year to $3.002 billion, but acquisitions contributed $388 million. Excluding that contribution, preliminary estimates suggest organic growth of approximately 14.2%, a stark contrast to the headline figure.

Similarly, next-generation security annual recurring revenue (ARR) grew to $8.1 billion, but after removing the $1.6 billion acquired contribution, organic growth is estimated at around 28.4%. Remaining performance obligations (RPO) reached $18.4 billion, with an estimated organic growth of 22.7% after stripping out the $1.8 billion acquisition boost.

Chief Financial Officer Dipak Golechha noted that the company is “executing ahead of our M&A integration plans,” with the trailing adjusted free-cash-flow margin expanding to 38.5%, up 430 basis points.

Q4 Guidance Signals Strong Momentum

For the fiscal fourth quarter, Palo Alto provided guidance that implies a significant sequential acceleration. Revenue is expected to reach $3.350 billion at the midpoint, an 11.6% increase from Q3. Next-gen security ARR is projected at $8.925 billion, up 10.2% sequentially, while RPO is forecast at $20.950 billion, a 13.9% jump. Adjusted EPS is guided to $0.97, up 14.1% from the prior quarter.

Valuation Concerns Persist

Despite the strong performance, the stock's valuation remains elevated. Palo Alto's market capitalization stood at approximately $296.6 billion, or roughly 26 times the midpoint of its projected fiscal 2026 revenue. The mean analyst price target is $345.82, about 5% below Friday's closing price, suggesting limited upside in the near term.

The analyst consensus remains Overweight, with 37 buy ratings, 7 overweight ratings, and 10 hold ratings. However, price targets have been slower to catch up with the stock's rally, with the median target at $340 and a range from $207 to $433.

Sector Comparisons

In the broader cybersecurity sector, Palo Alto's weekly gain of 9.65% lagged behind CrowdStrike Holdings (NASDAQ: CRWD) and Zscaler (NASDAQ: ZS), which advanced 12.34% and 11.56%, respectively. Fortinet (NASDAQ: FTNT) fell 1.43% over the same period.

Risks Ahead

Key risks include potential restrictions on Chinese purchases, which could impact future revenue, and integration challenges from the CyberArk and Chronosphere deals. Palo Alto reported a GAAP operating loss of $183 million in Q3, versus an adjusted operating profit of $814 million.

Investors will look to the fourth-quarter and full-year earnings release, scheduled for September 1, for further clarity on organic growth trends and the impact of the China review.
