PT Organics has initiated a recall of certain Peter Rabbit Organics Banana & Strawberry fruit pouches due to the potential presence of soft, food-grade plastic strands. The recall, announced on July 21, 2026, affects approximately 380,000 units distributed to major retailers including Target (NYSE: TGT), Kroger (NYSE: KR), and Meijer stores across the United States.

The recalled product is the four-ounce pouch with barcode 8 15367 01078 0, produced on packaging lane four, and includes six best-before dates in 2027. Sales of the affected pouches occurred between March 6 and July 13, 2026. PT Organics stated that all other flavors and date codes remain unaffected and safe for consumption.

According to a Kroger product listing, the initial gross shelf value of the recalled pouches is estimated between $665,000 and $832,200. This figure represents less than 0.1 basis point of either Target's or Kroger's projected fiscal 2025 sales. The upper-bound estimate places the total gross shelf value under $1 million, indicating that the direct product volume is limited relative to the retailers' massive revenue streams.

The recall was initiated after PT Organics' packaging supplier identified a faulty production run. Subsequent checks revealed that strands of soft plastic could be present in a limited number of completed pouches. PT Organics noted that the risk of a strand coming into contact with a child was independently assessed as unlikely. No injuries have been reported in connection with the recall.

Authorities in Hawaii issued a warning about potential choking or injury risks. Target stores handled local distribution in Hawaii, but no injuries were recorded at those locations. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announcement did not specify the total number of units affected, but Consumer Reports cited a company estimate of roughly 380,000 pouches shipped.

The recall's financial impact is modest compared to the retailers' overall sales. Target reported fiscal 2025 revenue of $104.78 billion, while Kroger reported $147.6 billion. The estimated shelf value represents 0.06-0.08 basis points of Target's sales and 0.05-0.06 basis points of Kroger's sales. Shares of both companies slipped approximately 0.4% on Wednesday, July 22, with Target closing at $137.92 and Kroger at $57.54, though the broader S&P 500 declined 0.14% on the same day, limiting a clear recall indication.

PT Organics operates as a private limited company, so public-market exposure applies solely to the two listed retailers. The main concern for investors involves supplier scope; a more widespread packaging issue could lead to higher expenses and erode consumer confidence. The current estimate does not factor in labor, freight, disposal, litigation, or lost sales costs, and is based on an estimated shipment volume and pricing from a single retailer.

Consumers are urged not to consume or serve the recalled pouches and to throw them away or return them for a refund. The FDA and PT Organics continue to monitor the situation, and further updates may be provided as more information becomes available.
