Plug Power Inc. (NASDAQ: PLUG) shares closed Friday at $2.32, up 6.4% for the week, following a stronger-than-expected second-quarter earnings report. However, the company faces a steep climb to meet its revised 2026 revenue growth target of 15%-16%, which implies a significant acceleration in the second half of the year.

The stock's weekly gain came after the company reported Q2 revenue of $178.3 million, beating the FactSet consensus of $160.1 million by 11.4%. Adjusted loss per share was $0.07, a cent better than the expected -$0.08. The gross margin was near break-even, a major improvement from the -13% in the previous quarter. Hydrogen fuel sales also grew approximately 15% year-over-year.

Despite the positive earnings report, trading volume was lackluster. Friday's turnover was nearly 49% below the weekly daily average of 97.4 million shares, suggesting that investors remain cautious about the company's ability to sustain momentum.

The Revenue Challenge

Plug Power's guidance for 2026 revenue of $816.5 million to $823.6 million (based on the 15%-16% growth from 2025's $710 million) requires a substantial pickup in the second half. With first-half revenue of $341.8 million, the company needs to generate $474.7 million to $481.8 million in H2, or roughly $237 million to $241 million per quarter. That represents a 33% to 35% increase over Q2's performance.

Management is counting on increased volumes in the fourth quarter, but the tight timeline leaves little room for customer delays or other disruptions. CEO José Luis Crespo said in May that the company is "positioned to achieve our EBITDAS positive target in Q4 2026," a metric that excludes interest, taxes, depreciation, amortization, and stock-based compensation.

Analyst Sentiment and Market Reaction

Wall Street remains divided on Plug Power. According to Google Finance, there are three buy ratings, eight hold ratings, and three sell recommendations. The average price target is $3.20, implying 37.9% upside from Friday's close, with targets ranging from $0.75 to $7.00. Notable recent actions include Roth MKM's Craig Irwin reaffirming a Buy with a $5.00 target, while Morgan Stanley's David Arcaro maintained a Sell with a $1.65 target.

The stock remains 49.3% below its 52-week high of $4.58, reflecting the execution gap. However, the market capitalization of $3.24 billion suggests investors still expect a potential rebound.

Financial Health and Risks

Liquidity has improved, but capital concerns persist. Plug Power ended 2025 with approximately $166 million in unrestricted cash, and later raised about $370 million through warrant exercises. However, shares outstanding increased by nearly 49% in 2025, highlighting dilution risk.

Key risks include postponed deployments that could cause revenue to fall short of the required run rate, rising hydrogen costs that may pressure margins, and continued cash outflows prompting further capital raises. Investors will closely watch two indicators in the coming weeks: quarterly revenue reaching at least $237 million and ongoing gross-margin improvements. Missing either would undermine the company's outlook.
