Plug Power Inc. (NASDAQ: PLUG) saw its shares edge lower in early trading on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, as investors weighed the company's latest quarterly report, which revealed a cash runway of just 2.7 quarters based on its second-quarter spending pace. The stock was down 0.5% at $2.08 by 09:42:57 EDT, following a 3.2% decline on Tuesday.
The hydrogen fuel cell company reported that unrestricted cash stood at $162 million as of June 30. At the second-quarter net cash usage rate of $61 million per quarter, that would fund operations for approximately 2.7 quarters, assuming spending remains steady. This metric has become a focal point for investors, as Plug Power continues to burn through cash while working toward profitability.
Encouragingly, the company's gross margin improved dramatically to minus 0.9%, up from minus 31.0% in the same period last year. This narrowing loss reflects cost-cutting measures and operational efficiencies that have been implemented under CEO Jose Luis Crespo, who stated the company is "executing its transformation into a stronger, more efficient and profitable company."
Revenue and Margins
Second-quarter revenue reached $178.3 million, with a gross loss of just $1.7 million, pushing the margin nearly to break-even. Operating expenses were slashed by nearly 50% to $62 million, and the GAAP loss per share narrowed to $0.14 from $0.20 a year earlier. The company also raised its 2026 revenue growth outlook to 15%–16%.
However, the improvements were not uniform across business segments. While the service segment posted a robust 27.2% margin, the delivered hydrogen segment recorded a staggering 48.2% loss per revenue dollar. Equipment and infrastructure contributed $81.9 million in revenue with a positive 1.9% margin, and power purchase agreements brought in $26.9 million but at a negative 30.0% margin.
Liquidity Strategy
Given the limited cash reserves, Plug Power is leaning heavily on asset monetization and alternative non-dilutive financing to extend its runway. After the quarter closed, the company secured approximately $47 million through such initiatives and is targeting over $275 million under an expanded program.
In a notable move, Plug Power canceled a $1.66 billion federal loan guarantee without drawing on the funds. The company confirmed in its quarterly filing that the termination incurred no repayment or termination fee, removing a potential overhang but also signaling a shift in its financing strategy.
Market Reaction and Outlook
Trading volume on Tuesday reached 46.5 million shares, below the three-month daily average of 56.2 million. The company's market capitalization stood at around $2.92 billion at the previous close, representing 4.1 times its annualized second-quarter revenue.
Plug Power maintains its forecast for positive EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, amortization, and stock compensation) in the fourth quarter. However, risks remain: asset sale timing could slip, proceeds may fall short of expectations, hydrogen costs could pressure margins, and customer concentration or additional financing needs could lead to shareholder dilution.
As the company navigates this critical period, the focus for investors will be on whether ongoing margin improvements can reduce cash burn before the current balance loses its strategic importance.
