Quanterix Corporation (NASDAQ: QTRX) experienced a sharp decline on Monday, with shares plummeting 39.3% to $2.45 after the company revised its full-year 2026 guidance downward. The stock touched a 52-week low of $2.15 during the session, reflecting investor concerns about growth prospects and liquidity.
The Billerica, Massachusetts-based life sciences company now expects 2026 revenue to be in the range of $142 million to $148 million, a significant reduction from the prior forecast of $169 million to $174 million. The midpoint of $145 million represents a 15.5% decrease from the earlier midpoint of $171.5 million. Additionally, the company pushed back its cash-flow breakeven target to 2027, and now projects year-end cash of approximately $80 million, down from the previous estimate of about $100 million.
In the second quarter, Quanterix reported revenue of $32.9 million, a 34% increase year-over-year, but management cited execution challenges and continued softness in end markets as reasons for the disappointing outlook. CEO Everett Cunningham stated, "Revenue fell short of our expectations, driven by execution challenges and continued market softness." The company is restructuring its commercial teams and appointing new senior leaders to address these issues.
Margins presented a mixed picture. GAAP gross margin declined by 240 basis points to 38.5%, while adjusted gross margin improved by 610 basis points to 47.9%. Adjusted EBITDA loss narrowed to $10.0 million, a 27% improvement from the year-ago period. The company also finalized the integration of Akoya, which is expected to generate annualized savings of $85 million, though it recorded a $26.9 million goodwill impairment related to the acquisition.
Quanterix's cash position at the end of June stood at $96.9 million, including cash, marketable securities, and restricted cash. Adjusted cash usage decreased significantly to $4.0 million from $14.8 million in the prior quarter. However, with shares trading near $2.45, the market capitalization of approximately $116.3 million is only slightly above the company's cash balance, raising questions about the valuation floor.
The company's diagnostics segment remains a potential bright spot. Starting July 1, Anthem policies began covering eligible blood-based biomarker tests, including Quanterix's LucentAD Complete test. The company is also advancing clinical utility research and pursuing an FDA approval pathway. These initiatives could provide a catalyst for future growth.
Analyst targets have not yet been updated to reflect Monday's decline. Both Canaccord Genuity and TD Cowen maintain Hold ratings with $4.00 price targets, implying potential upside of 63.3% from the current price. However, these targets were set before the Q2 results and may be revised in the coming days.
Key risks include prolonged weakness in academic and pharmaceutical spending, which could further pressure revenue and deplete cash reserves. Missing revenue targets again could increase the likelihood of needing additional financing. The company's ability to stabilize revenue through its commercial overhaul will be critical as it approaches the projected $80 million year-end cash position.
Investors will be closely monitoring Quanterix's progress in the second half of 2026, particularly the impact of the commercial restructuring and the adoption of its diagnostics products. The stock's sharp decline reflects a reset in expectations, and the path to recovery remains uncertain.
