NEW YORK, July 28, 2026 — QuantumScape Corporation (NASDAQ: QS) saw its shares tumble to a 52-week low on Tuesday, closing at $5.17 after touching $4.77 during the session. The decline extended a five-session slide of 14.5% that followed the company's latest earnings report, with trading volume surging 51% above the 65-day average to 41.7 million shares.
The sell-off comes as investors digest a revised partnership with PowerCo, the battery division of Volkswagen AG (ETR: VOW3). The updated agreement shifts from a cost-reimbursement model to milestone-based payments, with the program cap reduced by 42.3% to $75.4 million. Payments are now contingent on achieving specific battery cell delivery and validation milestones, raising the bar for future funding.
Financial Position and Burn Rate
Despite the stock's decline, QuantumScape reported $859 million in cash and marketable securities as of June 30, providing a preliminary runway of approximately 3.3 years based on first-half operating cash usage and capital expenditures of $130.9 million. The company, however, cautions that this estimate does not account for potential changes in spending, partner payments, interest, or financing activities, and limits its guarantee to a minimum of 12 months.
In the second quarter, QuantumScape narrowed its net loss to $98.2 million from $114.7 million a year earlier, while operating expenses fell to $106.1 million from $123.6 million. Customer billings reached $10.8 million, though management noted these do not qualify as revenue under U.S. accounting standards.
Operational Progress and Risks
On the operational front, the company reported that its Eagle Line test facility is achieving over 90% uptime for core tools, with plans to double cell production in the second half of the year. Atsushi Ogawa, an executive at Honda Motor Co. (NYSE: HMC), praised QuantumScape's technology for demonstrating “compelling and unique advantages” during an assessment phase, though the partnership remains a development project and has not yet progressed to a production contract.
Key risks include potential shortfalls in cell output, manufacturing yield, and customer validation. The milestone-dependent PowerCo payments and a separate $130 million upfront royalty licence—contingent on intellectual property milestones—add further uncertainty. Any delays could reignite concerns about future funding and potential shareholder dilution.
Market Outlook
With no scheduled investor events after July 22 and Honda set to report fiscal first-quarter earnings on August 5, QuantumScape faces a quiet period. For the stock to stage a sustained rebound, the company must prove its ability to scale cell production and achieve the milestone payments that are now critical to its financial trajectory.
