SELLAS Life Sciences Group (NASDAQ:SLS) experienced a sharp decline on Friday, with shares closing at $11.32, down 8.3% for the day and 14.2% for the week. The selloff came as investors grew cautious waiting for updates on the company's pivotal REGAL clinical program, testing the firm's roughly $2.23 billion market capitalization.
The Nasdaq Composite fell 2.1% over the same weekly period, highlighting the stock's underperformance. Despite the drop, SELLAS maintains a significant clinical premium, with its equity value based on 196.63 million shares outstanding as of June 2.
REGAL Trial Status and Key Milestones
REGAL is a Phase 3 randomized trial evaluating galinpepimut-S in acute myeloid leukemia (AML). The study will proceed to final analysis after the 80th death is reported. As of May 11, 78 such events had been recorded, and the study remained blinded. The company has stated it will disclose the 80th event upon its occurrence, followed by database lock, blinded review, and topline results.
Chief Executive Angelos Stergiou described the upcoming results as "an important milestone" in May. However, during a Friday appearance on Fox & Friends discussing AI in precision medicine, Stergiou noted that AI has the potential to "speed up the development work" but did not provide any specific REGAL date.
Balance Sheet and Dilution Concerns
New financing improved the company's balance sheet but also increased its equity base. The number of shares outstanding grew by 8.4% from March 31 to June 2. SELLAS maintained access to a $150 million at-the-market facility, which had not been used as of May 12. Additional warrant exercises or ATM offerings could result in further dilution for shareholders.
Pipeline and Future Catalysts
Beyond REGAL, SELLAS is conducting an 80-patient Phase 2 trial of SLS009 in patients newly diagnosed with AML. Initial results are anticipated in the fourth quarter of 2026, providing another potential milestone for the company.
Market Context and Risks
By the end of Friday's trading, investors were primarily valuing the prospect of a successful REGAL result and future pipeline potential rather than just the company's cash holdings. This means official updates from clinical trials continue to drive the stock's movements. Key risks include REGAL failing to meet its survival goal, potential delays in the event date compared to investor expectations, and ongoing clinical trial risks for SLS009.
